"Sandra knelt between her friend's legs, looking through the water at Holly's wide-open birth canal. She could see an opening about the size of her fist, with an amorphous shape pushing out of it. “You look open, I think. Something's ready to come out, though it doesn't look like a baby to me.”

“Here goes then.” Holly's face took on a look of intense concentration, and her belly heaved with a major contraction.

Sandra saw something shot out of her friend's birth canal, and caught it, reflexively cradling the bundle against her body. She lifted it out of the water and looked down.
