Kalani can decide to absorb stuff from her wombs, a portion of it gets converted into milk, she can't help that. Here, she has absorbed water to get a decent supply of liquid for her trip. The mermaids are safe in her tauric womb, while the gem (which is probably quite priceless) gets a special treatment to keep that safe as well.
When she puts stuff into her tauric body, her belly does not form a sphere, but instead, it bulges outwards to her flanks, keeping her feet on the ground and enabling her to walk, even as heavy loaded as she is right here.
