I see it as this. After a bit, he realized how ungrateful his family was, and he gave them their final wish. Now he is now free from the mental shackles of his old family. His old family had him so down in the dumps, that he is free to do whatever, and goes with Lily. Maybe I'm just overanalyzing this. Damn good work regardless
