Fuck you, patreon sellout.
Posted by nyte 9 years ago Report
Well, that's just like, your opinion, man.

nyte... I've really been a longtime fan of yours but... I feel the patreon is going a bit too far. A lot of your work seems to be just baiting people into supporting your patreon. And while I understand that everyone needs money, and it's really good to earn it doing what you love... it just seems like everything you do now is just a tease.

I understand your frustration, I do. I don't mean to be a tease. However, I've only been doing the Patreon for less than three weeks. I've finally gained enough support that I can work towards quitting my full-time job in the next month. Most of my long-time fans completely understand what I'm attempting to do. Now that I've built enough income, and within the next month won't be working what is basically two full-time jobs right now, I can put out content that is both free and content that is exclusive to my Patreon.
People can call me a sellout or a tease, or whatever they want, but it's going a little far to say "everything I do now is a tease" when I have put out work that is still free, and will be able to put out more in the near future if everyone is patient.
I've been giving my artwork away for free for a very, very, very long time. And if you don't want to continue to be a fan of mine anymore because right now you're not getting what you'd like from me for free anymore, that's on you. This isn't baiting or teasing, it's promoting what I do for a living. No different than a trailer for a movie or a cover for a book.
I'm sorry that you feel the way that you do, and I knew it would upset people, but the amount of support I've gained far outweighs the people who I've upset.
Again, this is on you. Either be patient for more free work, because what I do IS work, or say nothing at all. I don't owe anyone anything.

Here, read this if you value me as a person, and not just someone that used to provide free fapping material for you.

I'm not objecting to payment. I'm just saying the style of doing half of something for free then pulling out the "pay for more" card just seems a little cheap.
What I'm suggesting is keeping the free and paid content separate. Having entirety of mid-line quality comic A free and entirety of high-quality comic B patreon only and not getting half of both which just FEELS like being baited. I'm not trying to say you need to throw out the patreon, I just think you should change the method you're using as it feels like baiting.
And I'm not going to stop watching you. I love your art and you're one of my first and favorite vore artists.

Well, thank you, I appreciate the open and honest feedback, without the name calling and insulting, which I've been getting a lot of, which has made me very sad, because I'm not trying to "bait" anyone or feel cheap. I want to keep fans like yourself, and I want to offer something to everyone. I'm actually quitting my job on Monday so I can focus solely on my Patreon as it's gotten a lot of success. This way I can create more without being so stressed/tired, and have content for both audiences.
If you can suggest a way for me to promote content that IS exclusive to Patreon (a full comic) without making it feel like baiting, I would happily go that route. I'm doing my best to keep as many people as happy as I can.
I can definitely work on not as detailed comics that are shorter and free to the public. But how do I make it known what is available on my Patreon without making it seem like "hey, here's some, but you gotta pay me for more!"?

(Additionally, I'm finishing up doing exactly what you're telling me NOT to do with my Jessie VS. Ekans Mini EVB, so please don't hold that against me, I'm just finished what I started with this one. I'm taking everyone's feedback into this whole endeavor into account, and I value a longtime fan's opinion such as yours. Thanks, man.)

Well, I can't totally advise you in everything. After all, I don't entirely know your situation or anything.
I think it's just that putting paywalls on the EXACT same thing you used to give for free is what's turning people off. In general, I just think try to focus more on conveying that being a patron is good, instead of not being a patron is bad.
But again, I don't know a damn thing about how art funding and everything works. For all I know, my advice could run you into the ground, so take it all with a grain of salt.
And congrats on quitting the job man. I know what it's like to have a horrible job that barely pays you enough to keep your bills paid and yourself fed. Believe me, if I had a better job, I'd gladly be among the patrons.

I hear you loud and clear, and I think I've devised a way to keep giving away what I've been giving for free, and give my patrons exclusives as well.
I'm going to do my best for everyone, especially now that I've quit my job and can focus solely on this. Thank you for the congrats. :) I'm very happy that I can now do this for a living, or at least try to.
I think I can make all my fans happy, those who are able to give money and those who cannot.
Posted by Nikkidafox 9 years ago Report
Of course you can't make ALL your fans happy. Some of them (like venomousdreams) are unhappy simply because you profit now. But I'm really glad you got away from the job. I'll even pour myself a glass of wine in your honor. But I didn't expect your system to be perfect, and I still don't. You're just starting the patron game, and I imagine it can be pretty confusing.
And I really would be one of them, even just $3 a month or something, but my credit card company really has me by the balls after I missed a payment.
You make a couple of bad decisions in high school and this is what happens. But don't let my misfortune get you down. Go celebrate your victory over the man. Have a drink, admire (fap to) your work, do whatever. Here's to your new career as a full time artist.
Posted by nyte 9 years ago Report
No, they won't all be happy, but hopefully most will. :) Thanks for the drink in my honor! I did have a drink with friends earlier. :) My updated system, which you can read about on my deviant art page, is likely imperfect like you said, but I think it's better. It's been confusing, yes...almost daily adjustments. But it'll work itself out. And it's all good that you can't donate right now, or even ever. $3, $1 from anyone is helpful, but I wouldn't have been able to do this if I didn't have fans in the first place, so, you helped make this happen too. Thanks, my man. :)
