The ending was a bit of an experiment. Essentially upon being sucked into the digestion chamber, she had a psychotic break and thought she was being saved. She subsequently started telling her story to her "rescuer" until she realized she wasn't being saved and the chamber breaks her down. The entire story was her recounting what happened.
