As I was making the Naga race, This idea popped into my head. I like the way it turned out mechanically, seems like it be a fun race to play.

It'd be interesting if food was an explicit requirement for the gas instead of or in addition to the rest.

Yeah, makes sense. In the rules for resting it's implied you eat as part of a rest, but it's also true you can survive a number of days without food based on your constitution, so, I'll probably add it as a stipulation, for mechanical flavor at the very least.
