Sorry about the massively long delay, but things really haven't been going well for me over on my side.

To top it all off, I neglected to put up a straw poll to determine what kind of magic Lyra would be able to learn.. so I had to determine what she would learn through random chance, with the idea that we'd be able to come back to this later. Of course, now that I actually want to set up a vote, Straw poll doesn't seem to want to work for me. Which is good fun because I pretty much need it going before Lyra finishes the current task she's working on (which is when the magic school will open up properly.) So I'll try getting it going over the next few pages.

As for input, since there isn't exactly anything else to do but go meet up with our mystery companion.. how about people come up with ideas for Lyra's new Light magic? Please note that at the moment, she can only really perform utility spells, which are essentially cantrips from things like D&D. Feel free to come up with actual light based spells, and not just practice magic.. but I'll only be adding one of those to Lyra's idea list, and it will be pretty inefficent considering she's not good at magic yet.

"A simple courier run"

A group of researchers have set themselves up in some ruins of which the full trip there and back would take nearly two days from the town you are in on foot. They seem to be in constant need for supplies, but it seems like none of the locals are too excited to take up this mantle. However, apparently they have something to do with the earring you found clipped to that Ravenous wolf's ear, so it might be worth checking it out. You should meet up with the mechanic who lives in the town to see what this is about.

"The sword's Trial I"

There's a nearby ruin called a dungeon where you can undertake something called a Trial in order to upgrade the Old One's sword in a meaningful way, it's likely to be fairly difficult and seeing as you have no idea what will happen, it is also going to be fairly hard to prepare for this as well. Strangely, you feel as though you won't be able to bring anyone along for this one.

"Thy dear Lunatics"

It seems as though there is a problem with the nearby Fairy village that is bad enough to send a small group to look for help. The problem is getting there seeing as the forest is enchanted to purposefully get people lost through illusions and trickery and is filled with dangers such as feral fairies. Perhaps if I walk around town enough, I'll bump into the member of the group looking for a particular person to help out. You feel as though you don't want to run into them at night, however.

"Bandit curiosity"

About a month ago, some bandits appeared in the local area and have been kidnapping anyone that hasn't drawn blood from one of their group. But for some reason they haven't killed, tarnished or sold off as merchandise but instead have simply been holding them hostage in order to trade with the town. It's doubtful that the town would stop negotiations, so there isn't really a time limit. You feel as though killing any bandits, or carrying around a "Hunt x amount of Bandits" bounty from the local Adventurer guild would be a terrible idea.

Go with that feeling, let's head to the tavern, it's a pretty cool shindig anyhow.

Any magic ideas?

It was late so I didn't think of anything at the time, how about a flash bang sort of spell.

A ranged attack would be handy. Maybe a light spear or something? Might be very hard to do, though - since it focuses on light and healing.

Thus far you're the only one to actually think about using it to physically harm an opponent, which would be a proper spell.

I think there might've been a misunderstanding somewhere, which is that Light magic definitely can be used to hurt someone. In fact it's rediculously good on darkness based creatures and the undead due to a sort of cleansing aspect to it. This same cleansing aspect can be further warped to create magic that negates magic.

It's kind of a Typical Light element, just it'd be a mistake to see it as being only good. (Good vs Evil would be a terrible mindset to have, especially since that'd make darkness evil.)

Oh no i assumed it can do far more, but its common usage provided a skewed bias :P

Knowing that light magic can be used offensively here, I'm looking forward to seeing how it and the other schools of magic can be used in non-traditional ways. :D

It's a shame Lyra's is 3 and not 5, otherwise she'd be walking out of the school with something a good deal more useful. But then she'd have issues with things for her sword. It's a bit of a balancing act, I guess.

Between Lyra's and is, is supposed to be Int. As in her stat. Was trying to be fancy and my butt was bit.

If Light is strong against Darkness in TRPG, would the opposite be true as well? Could a powerful dark-using beast overpower a Lumination user?

AwokenedWispKP

Posted by AwokenedWispKP 5 years ago Report

Light and Dark do counter each other, in the sense that they have to stay in balance. Of course, speaking purely in terms of magic, in a clash, the stronger spell will generally win since neither really has an advantage over the other like water would on fire.

Ah, gotcha.

Magic ideas, for light huh? I don't know how much detail you want but here goes nothing.
Hmm...
How about a luminous water droplet? Simple and small, it'll go out after a certain period of time with a little pop.
Healing minor scratches, scratches you'd get from a rose bush or paper cuts.
Helping plants bloom.
Burst, basically a flash of light that could blind things for a short period of time, including Lyra if she isn't careful.
Sparkle, can imbue something to sparkle and shine brightly for a short period of time.

I may come up with more later.

Kartomic

Posted by Kartomic 5 years ago Report

Your 'sparkle' idea reminds me of a spell in d&d; faerie fire, which makes it easier to hit enemies its cast on.

jjlava

Posted by jjlava 5 years ago Report

Huh, I was more thinking making a rock or chunk of metal sparkle then tossing it to attract something attention away for us and keeping it busy while we sneak by it attack it from behind or run away from it.

Also side note, laser beams. If you want what is basically a damaging cantrip nothing simpler then shotting a concentrated beam of light out of our index finger.

Healing seems to be a definite keep between comments, which I guess is good for Lyra's image. When I get around to adding the ideas to her skills (they're literally called ideas until she makes them into proper spells.), you'll probably see what I mean.

Graywolf18

The healing aspect has my attention, but the combat applications of just using bright lights to dazzle/confuse/blind enemies could be worth looking into.

For healing, prick finger and experiment with healing it. Maybe focusing on the warmth rather than the light.

Also experiment with projecting the light away from our body and controlling it's movement. And maybe it's brightness.

Lets carry on with our business with a bit of experimental magic multitasking.

Use it to bend light to create duplicates, change colours, turn invisible, make objects appear in a different location. These might be to powerful (only small objects).
Highlight important objects?
Make a small beam of light like a cat laser pointer.

Ooh, I hadn't thought of Lumination being capable of illusions!

Kartomic

Posted by Kartomic 5 years ago Report

Well, I suppose we ought to head back to the tavern. Yay, Lyra has taken her first steps toward becoming a mage! As for spell ideas aside from healing...
-A flashbang/blinding spell of some kind could be useful for stunning an enemy.
-A ranged attack of some kind, be it a spear or a fireball of some kind.
-Buffs of some kind for Lyra and her weapon (and potential future companions). Increasing one's tolerance for damage, erecting a magic shield of some kind, or blessing a weapon with Lumination to make it hit harder? This last one may be a bit far-fetched, as I don't know the limits of what Lumination magic is capable of yet.
Is there a list somewhere of what magic is available to learn in this world? And do we have the ability to choose which magics to work towards?

I know times are rough right now, and I sincerely thank you for finding the time to keep up with TRPG; it's always nice to see a new update, and I don't mind waiting in between. Hopefully things will get better for you, Wisp. <3 <3

Unfortunately I haven't really made an attempt to write up a list of pre-made spells yet, since that would take a long time just to get something basic up. But magic is very versitile in Traveler, and very broken if human limits are broken/bypassed/not applied.

At the moment, Lyra's stat is 3.. which is average for a human. Magic is an option for her, but without knowing what she's proficient in.. she'll only be able to cast a few spells. And any damaging ones won't be all that grand. If her stat were 5, however, she'd be adept at magic.. and would probably be walking out of the school with some kind of projectile based spell and a heal that'd do more than fix minor injuries.. and probably be able to think of Buff/Enhancement spells.

At 7-8, a caster can pretty freely handle the basic elements regardless of proficiency.. as long as they know how. If they hadn't already gotten a more.. unique.. magic, before this point. Well, they'd be able to start learning one. Which would be impossible before this point due to the nature of such magic.

And at 10, a caster pretty much masters what's humanly possible with magic. Which is to say; Megumin's "EXPLOSION" is a legit spell that could be learnt for sheer scale of what's possible. Of course.. upon mentioning this in public, I may want to restrict bringing a stat up to 10 to prevent b-lining for it. Maybe make it that getting past 8 would require some kind of test? I dunno.

Either way, Lyra has them Strength investments. You can probably use what I said here and try to guess what having 5 str means. (+1 when lifting).

AwokenedWispKP

Posted by AwokenedWispKP 5 years ago Report

Bah.. okay, so I wrote Int in square brackets.. and it just isn't there. Guess that's my fault for trying to be fancy.

Kartomic

Posted by Kartomic 5 years ago Report

Ooh, neat; next time Lyra levels, I'll be pushing for more magic! Once a stat gets to 8, i'd say having a test or requiring aid from something/someone more powerful to push past that limit is totally plausible, and would help keep someone from growing *too* powerful.

AwokenedWispKP

Posted by AwokenedWispKP 5 years ago Report

To be fair, an 8 in a stat is already very powerful. In terms of fire power, at least for strength and intelligence, the character would probably be around the level of a small piloted mech armed with their respective weapons (basically you could expect seeing 30-45 damage from a single swing of a sword, which would rip through most enemies at this point without a non-leathality enchantment). The problem with strength is that it requires another stat to be raised with it to balance it out, otherwise the character would damage themselves with the force behind their own attacks.

Kartomic

Posted by Kartomic 5 years ago Report

Ah, so secondary powers/abilities will be needed so someone doesn't damage themselves with their strength? Ooh, interesting... I like it! Does magic work the same way? Is there blowback or a chance to mis-cast a spell if your skill isn't where it should be?

AwokenedWispKP

Posted by AwokenedWispKP 5 years ago Report

The main drawback of completely B-lining Magic is being utterly useless in every other aspect. The moment something gets too close, your big artillery is simply off the table, lest you desire to blow yourself, or your companions up. A glass cannon that when it explodes, causes shrapnel to go.. everywhere.

Kartomic

Posted by Kartomic 5 years ago Report

Ahh, I see. So a balance of magic and melee would probably be the way to go, then.

AwokenedWispKP

Posted by AwokenedWispKP 5 years ago Report

Of course, I can't exactly control what people want. It's more than possible that the lack of one stat is made up for by another party member, and people could just decide to b-line for one thing to make big reward jobs more viable early on.. or full on turn Lyra into a deadly pred.

To be honest, the comments have been much more tame than I expected.. and Lyra has been pretty well recieved too. So I don't exactly feel pressured when handling her, which is a really nice feeling.

And yeah, it might be best to not discuss how to raise stats with me.. since I know all the minor bits and stuff that would be effected, without having to look it up.. and the various challenges moving on. Strength is already at a pretty good point, maybe not perfect.. but it can't be more than Double constitution without causing self damage (I will have to re-write the basic mechanics page to include that). Which, to be perfect for this area, the Con stat will have to be raised by at least one point. Which of course, to do this would soak up a fair bit of investible points for other stats. But, that decision is totally up to the comments.

For magic, I'd say something along the lines of regeneration on top of a straight heal. Getting healed a little over time would help us avoid having to heal just to keep up quite as much. If we're using a sword for damage, then magic that keeps us up and swinging helps our chances in the long run.
