Due to having both witch and human blood, it is hard for Cleo to perform certain spells, specifically hexes and other curses, as well as leaking too much mana for the spells. To help with this, Cleo looks around of other witches to help her control her magic. She can't go to her best friend Alice because she's in prison, her father Fergus can't really do anything because most of the spells and techniques he knows have been illegalized because the state they live in is quite a religious one and very biased against warlocks and witches. Her grandparents Stephen and Celine are away on vacation, and Cleo is completely unaware of Hilda's existence because Fergus told her that she died of lung cancer long before he and Cleo's mother Ani met. Cleo finally decides to head to Mathilda's house to learn from her because she has the best relationship with her, but that's not really saying a lot. Witchy would just eat her and teach her nothing, and Marrow scares Cleo, but also in an odd way, Cleo is madly in love with Marrow, so she would not pay attention at all and would gaze at Marrow in admiration. Cleo also fantasizes about one day marrying Marrow and bake pies for her every day. In all honesty, Mathilda would've been the person capable of teaching Cleo. At first Mathilda is reluctant to teach Cleo anything because she hates tutoring people, and she already has her hands full with Connie and Vivian. Cleo manages to change Mathilda's mind after promising that she will give her resources for potions and other drugs since Cleo grows that stuff in her garden, as well as fresh victims for Mathilda to eat since Cleo lives in highly populated town full of people of different races and whatnot. Mathilda gives in and agrees to teach her a few stuff, she will soon regret it. Cleo turns out to be not the best student. Cleo does not take her time while crafting potions are practicing spells. Only about 1 hour a day is actually focused on becoming a better witch. Cleo usually spends all the other hours slacking off, eating everything in Mathilda's fridge, playing (tormenting) with Vivian, and attempting to eat Connie over and over because blondies are Cleo's favorite people to eat, especially if their human. As much as this enrages Mathilda, she pushes on because the stuff she get from Cleo every times she visits is actually some pretty valuable and useful stuff that is extremely rare where she lives. After a grueling 5 months, Cleo completes Mathilda's training with her final task is using her newly mastered spells on unsuspecting passersby she completes it with ease using a hypnosis spell on her victims and swallowing them whole. Mathilda gives off a very heavy sigh of relief and gives Cleo a thumbs up, actually being impressed of what she's accomplished. Now all the tutoring witch wants is for Cleo to leave so she can relax. Little does she know this won't be the last time she'll be acquainted with Cleopatra O'Brien...
