I don't really have any basis for whether this is actually wrong or not, but you switch between he and she a lot for Sam near the end of the story.

Well, sometimes when someone is a Herm, they don't really care what you call them by. Sam is one of those cases, and as a Herm, Sam doesn't care if you call them "He", "She", or "They". It's a bit complicated.

Ah, I assumed it was more that Sam was gender fluid (in both a physical and perhaps psych way) rather than being a Hermaphrodite which I suppose is just another state on the gender spectrum, but as you say it's complicated.

Well, Sam kinda is gender fluid. It just so happens that Sam can become a Herm, and as a Herm, doesn't care what pronouns you use, as long as you don't use the pronoun "it".
