Not sure what this is? Here's a post explaining the series!: https://aryion.com/g4/view/712411
____________
Suggestions last time were a little mixed, but I think I ended up hitting one most of the options that were brought up in the end! We ended up not being perceptive enough for tracking the trail the fox took to pan out, but maybe our quarry has come to us...
How should we respond to that suspicious noise?
You can find Adrea’s character sheet here!: https://aryion.com/g4/view/712418
Remember, you can ask any questions about the world (that are relevant to the current chapter) if you think you want/need more information about something! I'll do a 'live' intelligence check before answering if it's something Adrea might know.

Some action! My first thought was to get up and stealthily move towads the disturbance, but considering that if we were spotted the target could easily run back off into the forest and we'd be unlikely to catch them, I think I have a better idea.
Let's pretend to be asleep, but keep our eyes just open enough that they look closed but we can still see into the forest. If whatever caused the disturbance is indeed our theorised mage, then they'd need to approach from out of the trees to free their fox or complete its' mission to grab the herbs. Either way, we should let them think they've got the drop on us and expose themselves before we act. I say let them get as close as possible, then blind them and follow it up with an icebolt. Like with the fox we should be aiming to stun/cripple mobility, not kill.
If they decide not to come out of the treeline or we don't manage to identify them from a distance while pretending to be asleep, let's wait about a minuite before slowy standing up and approaching quietly. Again, we should be aiming to get the drop on them, and hit them with the Blind + Icebolt combo. I'd also considered magelight, but I would imagine it would take long enough to cast that that we wouldn't be able to follow it up with an attack before the target could react to being lit up and flee.
In the event that a full on fight breaks out, let's yell to wake up Bally while we sling spells with this mage. Having her able to help us out in a fight should drastically boost our chances of success.

I supposed I could phrase part of this as a question. How exactly does combat/turn order work? Am I right in assuming we wouldn't have time to cast multiple spells including magelight before someone could react/counterattck?

Yes, spell casting isn't instant so your target would have have at least a littel time to react after the first

I 2nd this, a sneak attack gives us a better chance at a clean capture.
I'd say If we can't use multiple spells before a counterattack, we use blind, then use that advantage to get in close and attempt to tie our culprits legs up with the rope from our backpack. We then call Bally for help, who should have ample time to leap to our aid to further restrain our pesky thief. Once our mage is properly subdued, the interrogation can begin!
All of this assuming the rustling in the woods isn't like, a squirrel or something haha.

Definitely agree here. No need to immediately tip our hand here if it is the mage, and if it's not the mage, then we avoid looking stupid in front of Bally by freaking out over a wild animal or something.

Investigate, but don’t go to far away from the house. If you find something dangerous wake up the wolfess.

Wait and prepare to blind them if it's the culprit.

After having moved around with the fox all day, does it only want to go the direction of its summon location or to the summoner themself? If it is the first, the point is moot, but if it’s the second, take the caged fox and move along the porch. If the fox maintains it’s direction, then this would be less likely to be relevant, but in the case it angles itself towards the noise, we know it’s the summoner, probably.
