I guess because in canon by eating them she "absorbs" them so she not gain weight, belly etc. And to be fair if my friend haven't told me about game I would have discover it much later.

Yeah - I find it one of best to though kinda sad it has only one ending and is more into story telling than RPG.

I mean thats just how that series is. Not a ton of jrpgs have branching paths but theyre really amazing stories
