Ame Onna are yokai that appear on rainy days and nights. Their sometimes beautiful or haggish in appearance. While under the cover of the rain, Ame Onna seeks out pregnant women or new children. If they should find a pregnant woman that night, they eat her and carry her off into the darkness, spiriting her away to another world. Sometimes mothers who had their children snatched away will turn into a Ame Onna out of grief and despair. Having lost their minds, these transformed women roam the streets at night with large sacks hoping to replace what was stolen. They sneak into houses where pregnant women and children can be found, and steal them away from their homes into the night.
