With this drawing, I wanted to experiment with my style more and try to find a more efficient workflow. I think I made progress in both regards.
Stylistically, this is much closer to what I want my work to look like. And in terms of time, this was finished much quicker than usual, so I'm optimistic.
Once I get a bit more used to this workflow, I'll try to make another comic, since my last one was almost two years ago (oof).
I hope you all like the way this turned out, and that I didn't give you too much whiplash with all the experimenting with my style.

Despite all the experimentation, you've got a consistent style and it's one that I really really like.

I've always felt like my style is all over the place, so having you say that is reassuring that it's not as bad as I thought.

I'm curious now, what do you define as your style, and how did you improve your workflow? I've seen a few artists mentioning the same words, and I'm just there wondering what a workflow even is x)
Posted by Mouhr 3 years ago Report
Well, my style is esentially what artistic liberties I take on the subject matter.
What do I change, how do I change it? The unique combination of those choices constitutes the unique artstyle everyone has, at least in my opinion. As such, many artstyles influence each other and are often amalgamations of multiple elements of different styles. And since my execution of those choices has been somewhat inconsistent, I consider my artstyle inconsistent as well.
As for workflow... I don't know if other people have the same definition I do but, here's how I would define it: A workflow is the steps taken to complete a drawing (Or whatever else you're doing). For art, the rough steps might be, sketch, lineart, flat colours, shading etc. Of course each step is a lot more complex than just that.
I've improved my workflow recently by, for example, pulling up a reference for something I struggle with before even starting to draw it. So instead of wasting 30 minutes on trying to make it look right, failing and then getting a reference, I now just start with a reference and cut out those 30 minutes. I've also played around to find out new, quicker ways of achieving the same thing. Like adding the rough shape of a shadow on a new layer and modifying that, instead of painstakingly and gradually adding it on the same layer as the base colour. Much quicker to add and much easier to correct that way.
Sorry, this ended up really long but I hope it answered your questions!

The only whiplash I got was out of cuteness! I think you did a fantastic job with this one, glad you feel better about your art flow! Granted, my eyes can tell the difference, but it is something I will be easily able to adapt to!
And I am looking forward to the next comic!

What an adorable character

What. A. CUTIE! I love her contours! Her jaw is epic, the forward tilt of her pelvis creates some really satisfying lines up her belly and back down the back and around to the thighs for the eyes to follow. It’s just a really nice pose all around. And of course I’m always impressed with your coloring.

You described it so nicely! I'm glad the pose works as intended.
I was a bit worried it'd be too boring, not gonna lie.

Damn, that was an amazing explanation. You can tell that Xiao is an artist!
