Her long heels clacking against the wet cement of the sidewalk, wearing a tight blouse and a skirt, Amelia looked at her watch, then looked about. The mouse had stayed at work longer than she’d intended. Now it was only five minutes to curfew, after which if she wasn’t yet home, she’d be fair game for any predator who was out.
Of course this was an old law, and predation, even after curfew, was unusual in this day and age. It happened sometimes, perhaps even more often than the papers admitted. But most civilized furres didn’t eat civilized furres, even if technically speaking they were their prey.
Still, it did sometimes happen, and as a mouse, Amelia was technically low on the food chain. She came to an abrupt stop, seeing a tall muscled tom cat down the street. She hid down an alley, telling herself she was being silly. He was probably just an ordinary citizen on his way home, but there was something about the muscled cat as he padded quietly down the street that made her shiver. Of course there had been a time when a curvaceous little mouse doe like Amelia would have been a tempting dinner for a cat! And who knew, perhaps this cat kept to the old ways? Anyway, better safe than sorry. She waited until he passed, then continued on her way.
Oh gods, she’d wasted time, it was just a few minutes to curfew. She ran ahead, and spotted a mongoose. A mongoose! They didn’t eat mice. Well, technically they could eat mice, but Amelia knew they much preferred snakes. *Click!* *Click!* *Click!* *Click!* Amelia ran up to her, and walked beside her.
The mongoose looked down at the little mouse walking beside her and smiled. The plump young doe looked to be healthy and clean! Oh, she was perfect! The mongoose had resigned herself to staying up late hunting, but fortune had gifted her with a finer mouse than she could ever have found wild in the woods. Ordinarily, the mongoose would have teased the doe mercilessly, but she didn’t want her prey to run away, at least not before curfew. And so she smiled. “Can I help you?” she asked.
The mouse smiled sheepishly. “You mind if I walk with you?” she asked.
The mongoose gave her an uncomprehending look. “Sure. . . I guess. . .” she answered.
“Oh thank you!” the mouse replied. “You see,” she added nervously, “it’s getting close to curfew. I could use some company on my way home. . . My name is Amelia, by the way.”
“Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!” the mongoose replied, pretending she’d been unaware. “Well of course, I don’t mind the company!” she answered. “Ohhhhh, it is getting close,” she added, looking at her watch. “How do you happen to be out so late?”
Amelia’s ears fell. “I was working. . .lost track of time,” she admitted. “Gosh, it’s almost here.” She fidgeted. “If I could just walk as far as you’re going, it would help.”
Rue smiled, looking at her watch as the second hand swept past the hour. “Actually, this is my house here,” she announced. And with that, she yanked the mouse into the air.
*SQUEAL* “What are you doing? What are you doing?” Amelia squealed.
“Catching a mouse,” Rue announced merrily, pulling off the mouse’s shoes, and pulling down her skirt. “It’s past curfew, and you are legally prey for any pred that catches you.”
“Let me go!” Let me go!”
“I don’t think so,” Rue announced, pulling down panties and pantyhose. She licked her chops at the sight of the plump rump, thick pink tail, meaty legs, and softly rounded belly. She didn’t care that much for mice, but even so her mouth watered. This was far better than she would have found going to the woods tonight. She wasted no time stripping off the rest of the doe’s clothes and walking with her to her front door.
“Let me go! Let me go!” Amelia squealed, looking up as that front door approached. “Pleeeeease don’t eat me!” she sobbed, saying those words she never expected to have to say. “Pleeeeeeeeease don’t eat me!” She squealed.
Rue inhaled, and the aroma of the terrified doe mouse filled her nostrils. Perfect! There was no need to tease her further. “Oh, I’m not going to eat you,” she replied, opening her front door.
The mouse doe looked up in surprise as the mongoose carried her inside. "You. . ..you're not? You’re not going to eat me" she asked timidly.
Rue smiled. "I promise," she assured her, shutting the front door. "I'm a mongoose. I don't even like eating mice much, not even wild ones" she explained, walking inside towards a cage door.
“Oh, that’s a relief,” Amelia sighed. “Heh, I feel embarrassed thinking. . .” She shook her head, feeling silly for her mistake. But then what did she want? And was she putting her in a cage? She hoped this was some sort of teasing, before the mongoose sent her on her way. “So uh, why did you catch me?” she asked as Rue opened the cage door.
The mongoose didn’t answer, but dropped the mouse inside the cage and locked the door shut. Amelia put her paws on the bars looking out. She felt terribly uncomfortable, completely nude, completely exposed before the mongoose, though she tried not to let it show. It wasn’t sexual modesty that bothered her, Rue wasn’t even her species. But technically at least, mongooses could eat mice. Amelia has never felt so much like. . . prey.
“And why did you strip me?” Amelia asked the mongoose grinning down at her through the bars. “And why did you put me in this cell?.”
Rue didn’t answer Amelia’s question right away. Instead she stared up over the mouse’s head, to her confusion.
