Both races are innately magical, but before coming into contact with each other, it mainly only manifested in qualities like enhanced physical attributes, healing, and elongated lifespans.
Once they discovered each other, the amazons were for a time considered gods, especially when they started producing magical effects upon eating those sacrificed to them.
This discovery led to some amazons becoming greedy as they continued to hunger for the newfound magic gained from elfin. They engorged themselves as a show of force, but unbeknownst to them, the elfin they devoured wouldn't digest. Instead, those trapped within amazon stomachs learned they had an element of control over the magic as well and caused it to backfire on those who subjugated them.
Eventually, after much diplomacy and learning about their symbiosis and its benefits, the two races enacted peace and found that their societies would prosper more if they worked together rather than against each other.

And this is very logical and cool! Of course if the "deities" were unaware of these 'inferior" species's capacity, they would try to dominate them. AND KARMA STRUCK BACK! I love how jumbled the history is and instead of a clean peace treaty, it took time and diplomacy!

Is the peace worldwide, or are there societies were Elfin are still treated as slaves?

By this point peace among races is a standard here. Any sort of 'domination' now is pretty harmless and consensual.
