How does he know the book's overdue? Owl magic. Just ignore her if she says otherwise, she's obviously lying. Time to take her aside for some "personal talk" and "inner reflection" on the merits of returning books at a proper time!

Or in other words: Owls probably shouldn't be in a position of authority over mice. Or in other, other words: Don't let yourself become the target of an owl's hunger.
