A pair of petrans from Auzora, the male, or gargoyle, guarding his gorgon mate from the air as she finishes her meal of a petrified human. Both sexes of petran are obligate lithovores, or rock eaters, but only females have a gaze attack that turns non-petrans first into living stone like a gargoyle , and then causes them to gradually freeze up into a statue. Though female petrans are externally fleshy, a gorgon's stomach has stone-lined ridges to help grind up and crush the rocks of her diet.

Though capable of petrifying and consuming other races - or consuming men of their own race as-is - much of the time gorgons dine upon mundane rocks like their males. A varied diet is important, with granite and basalt being staples, and some other rocks like limestone having little nutritional value. In petran cuisine, clay sees a great deal of use as the primary component of sauces and watered down into slip, which petrans consider a refreshing beverage, and flat pieces of slate or shale are used as edible utensils, like flatbread. Crystals and gemstones are considered 'sweets' by petrans, and metal causes intoxication similar to alcohol in most other races.
