In this world, Ess and Annaro are not blood sisters, but rather, Annaro was turned by Ess who's one of the more ancient vampires. Ess, would treat Annaro, much like family, resulting in a sisterly relationship between them, that is slightly different from the usual canon where they had a falling out.

Ess is so old that her body can't quite handle her growing power, literally warping her features. As such, she spends a great deal of her time sleeping for extended periods, waking up for brief times, to feed and interact before returning to her slumber.

One could argue that she might be waiting to accept death, only being held back since she cares for those she loves and cannot bear to leave them alone.
