In one gulp, a minor clan of shady reputation has become the most powerful force in the kingdom, second in might only to the palace. The plundered girth of Maebe Corcairan ( Brainfood), though she has made few public appearances since her fateful digestion of the great Mia-Ti (
MianQ), is now legendary, and murmurs of her magical powers follow her name like an echo.
She is, in truth, still in the process of digesting Mia-Ti’s prestige. Those who trembled with love for the Oxochalt now tremble with equal dread of the belly she encircles, and hold their breath, waiting to see which way the belly will jiggle, and whether Maebe can truly absorb all that she has consumed. Whether their dread will resolve to vengeance or to a new, ghoulish loyalty, hangs on the events of the coming days and weeks, and specifically on the decisions of one man.
Kaelric Draeven ( shrunken1ninja)’s political ambitions, absurd as they might have once seemed to his would-be rivals, have served him well in his business dealings for much of his life, giving him a certain mystique which has allowed him to quietly soak up investments from the gullible and the adventurous alike, and slurp down far more serious and prestigious outfits into a pit of spurious capital.
The arrival of the Oxochalt in the kingdom was the windfall of the century, providing him with a veritable empire of gullible and adventurous supporters, not to mention meals. At last, the throne no longer seemed like a distant dream.
For one golden moment, when Mia-Ti proposed to install him as king, it seemed like the world was his, as it had always been his, like history had rolled in with the tide and was willing to deliver him his destiny. All he had to do was pledge himself to her new, glorious Faith. Of course he fell down on his knees before the world and wept like a worm reborn.
Things have changed slightly. A great many people now expect a great deal from Kaelric. In his quieter moments, he might admit to himself that he and the dearly digested Oxochalt are not exactly alike in character. But he is a passionate man, and has built quite a reputation as a dueller, through a combination of gifted embellishment and artful fabrication. For him to challenge Maebe Corcairan and demand justice for his saviour would be well within his rights, and possess a sort of poetic majesty. It is after all only fitting that the fat of the kingdom’s deliverer should belong to him, who the people still wish to see rule as their champion.
Dragon duels are indeed a glorious thing. No weapons, no clothes, only two alchemic bodies wrestling to engulf each other.
Of course, word of Maebe’s new physique has not eluded Kaelric, causing him to reflect that he and she are in fact still formal allies, despite everything she has done. Some might even call it unchivalrous to spring a challenge on her in such a manner.
On the other hand, his claim to succeeding the Oxochalt as beacon of the kingdom’s hopes is tenuous at best. If he is to maintain the support of the people, he must take decisive action.
Kaelric decides that the noblest course of action is to publicly send a diplomatic delegation to Maebe’s keep with a formal declaration of intent to investigate and if necessary administer justice.
This delegation is, of course, quietly devoured within minutes of setting foot on her lands.
Maebe has no time for Kaelric’s theatrics, deep as she is in plans to overwhelm the palace and the queen.
She knows exactly what Kaelric needs to maintain the support of the kingdom, and, as it happens, is of a mind to give it to him.
She sends every Clanless goon in her employ to turn over his businesses from top to bottom and root out every secret there is to learn about him.
From there, it’s not difficult to maneuvre him into a public duel. The whole kingdom is watching, waiting to see if the Oxochalt’s faith in him was justified.
They dig a pit at the foot of the rock in Bledhaell. Thousands gather to watch.
A heretic priest officiates.
The crowd cheers for Kaelric. Part of him wishes he didn’t have to be naked for this. Being eaten would be humiliating enough in fine robes.
Maebe slides into the pit like a seal sliding into the water, her entire body wobbling with alchemic power.
The crowd doesn’t cheer for her. They are quiet and solemn.
Maebe has brought enough cheer for all of them. A glorious thing, she reflects, how victory follows victory.
To the fat, all fat shall flow, and from the puny all shall be taken.
The duel begins.
Session 2 of the first Official Dragon Coup Campaign ends, with the digestion of Maebe Corcairan of the Corcairan Conclave.
One contender for the throne remains- Kaelric Draeven. He will face off against the incumbent Queen Elleri Bledhgoeden in the final session of this campaign. Mia-Ti and Maebe will join him as sentient fat.
