Book 3: Cold Night

In spite of my thick coat of white fur, I never was fond of winter. It always felt like a season of emptiness for me, where no flowers bloomed and few birds sang. As I sit here at the desk and write, I have to actualy keep a blanket on me it is so cold.

But it was not as cold for me as it was for poor Young Hee. See, unlike me or Fridge Deer or Rabbit or even Sea Turtle, Young Hee didn't really have anything to cover her skin. So what happened today seemed inevitable.

Let me tell you about it.

*******************

It occurs in my home, a little cottage by the road, where on the other side the rice pattys grow in the warm months, and where every morning the delivery man passes by on his scooter just after the bus goes. Snow was falling, and the school was closed because the heat was off. For once, I was able to sleep in.

But I had forgotten my darling daughter, Young Hee, who shivered under her blankets. She was a pretty six year old, with black hair and brown eyes, but she had no fur. therefore, even though she was snuggled next to me, she was still cold. In the past, heat was rarely a problem in our house, but this was the first real winter that Young Hee was here (She had come to my home just after spring had come, if you recall), and it never really hit me she might be cold.

"Papa..." She whimpered, trying to shake me awake. As I opened my eyes, I could see she was rubbing her hands from the cold. Wide eyed, I rememebred that poor Young Hee had no fur and no shell to hide in. I walked to the heatr and turned it on, but it would take awhile for the heat to flow through the house. Most of us would be alright, but Young Hee was shivering. I told her to sit by the heater and keep the blanket around her. It helped, but she was still very cold for awhile.

"Papa..." She said, looking at me. "WHy is it so cold this time of year?"

"That is the way of nature." I replied, sitting by her to keep her warm, though my own thick white fur made that hard since for me it was very hot. "Winter comes to clense the land."

"How?" Young Hee asked me, slwoly warming up.

"Nature uses the snow to clense the air and the ground, and leave it cleaner than before." I said. It was true of course, but Young Hee found it confusing.

"Papa... how come when I get clean I have to take a WARM bath? can't the earth get clean and still be warm?"

I chuckled some, not answering. She would figure it out when she was older.

By now it was warming up enough that she had stopped shivering, but she clearly needed to stay wrapped up in the blankets today it was so cold. I just held her as we watched the snow fall for awhile, glad I had a thick coat of fur.

Of course, I had no idea the heater was on the verge of breaking.

******************************

And it did that very night. Don't know why it happened, maybe Sea Turtle splashed water on it or something. I was never really that good at understanding mechanics. But the point is that it broke that very night, shortly after I tucked YOung Hee into bed.

Up until then it had been an okaty day though, Young Hee dressed warm and went in the snow for a bit, but mostly we stayed inside and played a game or two, and read books. It was a slow day for the most part, a day for us to relax and catch up on our work.

But when that heater broke, Young Hee began to shiver in her covers and sneeze. I looked at her as she awoke, cold and crying.

"There there..." I said, holding her. I wrapped the blanket around her to help keep her warm, but it wasn't enough tonight. EVen I was a liuttle chilly, and I had fur!

"Papa..." She said suddenly, "Can I sleep in your belly tonight?" I sighed some as she asked. Now I had tried hard to keep her out of my tummy (Especially after the talk I had with her teacher, if you remember), but tonight I could see no alternative. It would only get colder as the night went on, and I knew Young Hee, with no fur, would likely catch a cold, or worse, if I didn't do it. I just didn't have the ability to keep her warm effectively outside of my tummy in this case, though I did try.

"Well..." I said. I knew what I had to say but I was worried. she like dbeing in my tummy alot, and I was trtyign to ween her off of it some. But I knew there was no choice. "Alright. but we better make you a blanket."

I carried her into the kitchen, and was delighted when I looked in the fridge. Fridge Deer, sleeping in a warmer area than the fridge where he usually was, had left a batch of bread dough. WWhile I normally did not eat it raw, I thought it was clerarly thick enough to serve as a blanket. I took it out to wartm up on the counter for a bit, all the while snuggling Young Hee so she would not get cold. After a bit, I gset her down and she started to shiver. I worked fast, rolling out the dough (There was quite a lot of it).

"Papa..." she asked, shivering. "What are you doing?"

"I am making a blanket for you." I said, rolling otu the dough into a very thick sheet. Young Hee came over in thos ecute pink PJs of hers, and I set her right in the middle of it. She wriggled a little, the feeling no doubt unusual for her, but it was the best I could think of.

"This feels all gooey papa..." Young Hee told me. "But.. .it is kinda nice, like a big blanket." She continued to shiver up until I wrapped her up in the dough, making sure to seal her in nice and tight. I couldn't believe I was doing this though, since the last time Young Hee had been prepared for me to eat was some time before the snow was even thought of hitting the area. Still, it was different this time, sine the preparation was solely to maker a more palatable blanket, one I wouldn't gag on.

No offense, but cotton and feather blankets are not very tasty.

Once Young Hee was wrapped up, I had bit of douigh left over. Carefully, I put it over her head, making her giggle some, alnmost totally cocooning the girl in dough save for her face. She smiled after a bit as I finished working.

"This feels good Papa..." she told me. I chuckled some, imaginging her as a big loaf of bread in a bakery, and could not help but lick my lips.

Yes, I licked my lips. She looked yummy to me at that moment, like a little pastry. So I did wghat I would do with any pastry. I opened my mouth, and began to eat it.

I took it in slowly, YOung Hee loving the warmth of my maw as she slipped in and down my throat. Unfortunetly for me, she WAS delicous, and I realized I was liking this as much as she was. I'll admit right now I am a bit worried about that as I look at it in afterthought, but what could I do? As I ate her up, sending her bit by bit into my belly, I slowly rubbed my tummy.

And when I was done, I gave a satisfied burp.

"Excuse you!" Young Hee said. I felt her wriggle about in her doughy cocoon, giggling some. "It's nice and warm now papa, thank you!"

"You're welcome." I said, smiling, glad she was happy. I sound found out how much better my tummy was as a bed as she was quickly fast asleep. With a smile, I padded over to my writing deak, wrapped the blanket around me, and began to write.

***********************

I guess it was going to happen sooner or later this winter. My home is not very warm, and my tummy, unfortunetly, is. So Young Hee is now in there, wrapped in bread dough, sleeping happily. Meanwhile, I write and worry. see, today was the first time in awhile I enjoyed eating Young Hee as a snack, and it scared me some.

Yet when I think about it, I doubt anything will come of it. Young Hee is still my daughter, and I will never let anyone, even me, hurt her. Still, I cannot help but picture her as a loaf of bread now, she looked so cute.

Well, I better get to sleep, as no doubt you should fair reader. Goodnight, and dream sweet dreams. Moreover, do not fear the cold, since it is only temporary, and the warmth of spring will soon replace it.

(AT this point the writer ended his account. The publisher chuckled soem as he read this, and looked especially eager to see the next story.)
