So yeah, I've been experimenting with ways to produce pictures completely digitally, without bothering with that whole drawing-stuff stage. This was primarily a test to see if I had reached the point where I could both sketch and ink something entirely in Photoshop. I also played around a bit with black and white shading just to see how it would play out.

What you see is the result of those experiments. It is distinct from practically all of my other pictures in that it was inked on a tablet, isn't in color, has not been resized and does not actually show anything digesting anything else.

Well, not explicitly, anyway.

The character design was inspired by some of questionabletaste's pictures. The pose didn't come across quite like I wanted (mostly I seem to have lost track of what her left arm was supposed to be doing) but overall I'd call it a successful screwing around session. Successful enough that I doubt I'm going to be bothering much with that "paper" crap anymore.

It looks excellent. Her face is great, but I'm not sure why you did the change of style. I love the line-less face and hair, but you started adding thick lines on her legs, feet, and arms. Next time I would suggest starting with a sketch (in lines), then starting your painting and using only highlights and shadows to do your edge-expression. In the final product, it looks phenomenal without lines.

Heh...the style switch was partially because I was experimenting with different things and partially because I went completely apeshit with the face. It was one of the first things that got inked, and even though I was supposedly just checking to see how a quick and dirty treatment would look, I ended up giving it the full cigar before I even inked most of the rest of the picture. The rest is more indicative of what the thing was actually expected to look like.

As for the hair, it was merely in the right place at the right time; I was grabbing reference art for hair since I usually have trouble with it, and I immediately recognized that my main problem was my custom brush for hair was way, way too sparse. I made a new one which is wondrous and magical, and I happened to throw it on her head (even though it's way too small to actually see the benefits of the brush; most of the detail in this one was done using the original brush, as it is better suited for small details).

As far as painting from a sketch, that's what I tried and failed at before trying this. It still gives me trouble; the transition to defining structure without laying down edges first remains problematic for me, mostly for a bunch of little niggling reasons that revolve around the fact that I never do it and thus tend to forget the techniques I use to lay down the foundation I need. It's usually a matter of getting the scene lighting put together, having everything sketched out, and getting a good starting point where I can start putting in details without losing so much of the underlying sketch that I don't know where to put stuff. It's a problem I mostly know how to fix; I just forget that I know.

That's what happens when you paint once a year.

But that's why I'm doing this stuff. I've decided I'm sick of not being the best at everything. I grew complacent in my natural talents, and my peers overtook me through honed skill and study, the curs! But now I shall visit that insult back upon them tenfold!

Random tip for digital inking: Work on a canvas twice or three times the size you want the final image to be. When you're finished drawing and colouring, reduce the size of the image. It makes the lines look smoother.

That's what I was referring to when I said this image was not resized. I usually work at a much higher resolution than the final image (for both line quality and for color detail). I just didn't want to do this test on a resolution that wouldn't fit on my screen.

In the case of this pic, I would have just used the pen tool for the trouble spots anyway; something big like the belly is just asking for trouble.

Bah! I spit on the pen tool! You'll never be able to draw beautifully smooth lines if you keep taking the easy way out.

This is really good, i especially like the different shades of black and grey and how you used it on her, very nice work

That's neat. I know I have not reached the stage where I can do my drawings...ALL digitally. I do all my sprite work that way but as far as my normal stuff, I still use a pencil and paper in the beginning.

The arm is a little off, but other than that, it's an awesome pic! Love the belly like this. I would like to see some more attempts using these methods!
