Falaricae History and Timeline
Relevant notes: Anf. refers to the Anfalae calendar established by the convocation of Hollander. This was the first attempted method of large-scale timekeeping, but remained confined to Ilfas Vale. The Anfalae calendar is dated as beginning when Anfala the Starry Messenger first set foot in Ilfas Vale, with dates before this date being marked with negative signs (mathematics being already advanced to the point where the Anfalae understood negative numbers). Ed. abbreviates the Edunian standard calendar, which officially began on the day when Dunas the Conqueror was coronated at Evenstar castle. Imposed upon conquered nations, it soon became the standard method of record throughout the wide Edunian empire. After the destruction of the Edunian empire, Falacaerr did not possess a standard calendar again for hundreds of years until the renowned Council astronomer and mathematician Simon Everett proposed a carefully calculated new calendar at the Chak Exhibition. This new calendar is abbreviated Ev., but it was further proposed to back-date the calendar's beginning to the sounding of the Horn of Zeanir. Based on the painstaking observations of the Council observatory, the Everett calendar is much more accurate than either the Anfalae or the Edunian calendars, requiring only one minute of correction every 1600 years.
It is also of note that Falacaerr, having three moons of varying closeness, size, influence, and procession, has never adopted a lunar calendar in great part. Such a calendar would be necessarily far more complex than the universal solar calendar, so the solar calendar is favored even amongst the cultures which keep an auxiliary lunar calendar (such as the Moon elves of Norwood, whose lunar calendar is based entirely upon the pearl moon and refuse to acknowledge the other two moons). In place of months, seasons have been satisfactory to regulate the divisions within a year, as the axial tilt of Falacaerr is somewhat greater (28.8 degrees) than that of Earth, which leads to a greater variation between the seasons. Dates marked with a question mark are not established for certain, with the greater number of question marks denoting the greater margin of uncertainty.

The infamous Act of Restitution, signed by Emperor Dunas in the autumn of 2 Ed., strips many rights from Lian, bars them from office, and denies them the right of ballot and assembly. From this time on the Lian are little more than the property of their conquerors.
3 Ed. - General Teras'lian and the few Lian survivors settle in Ilyn Forest amongst the Gold Elves. The Elves refuse to welcome the Mareten who accompany them, however.

In retaliation, Emperor Dunas orders all Lian over the age of twenty executed, an act known to the Lian as the Severance of Generations.
6-40 Ed. - Mareten conquests begin. Spreading out from Ilfas Vale, the Mareten rapidly populate the empty plains of Ansemar. At a grand ceremony held over three days at Evenstar castle, Dunas forces the Mareten and the Lian to make this pact with himself and the new aristocracy of the empire. From henceforth much of the Mareten population is reduced to slavery as well. All pact-bound Mareten and Lian are disqualified from voting. Printing presses are suppressed, with only state-sponsored and monitored publications approved.

Crueltus also institutes the method of choosing execution victims by lot and forcing conquered rivals to transfer the pact allegiance of their subjects to the victor.
32 Ed. - Crueltus' eldest son born. As his first two children are daughters, however, the emperor hastily convenes a council of nobles which revises the Anfalae inheritance laws, forbidding women from succeeding to the throne, holding public office, or owning property.
36-39 Ed. - Edunian expeditions sent into the Abydor Woods to capture Arachnal and her children. These ill-equipped, poorly-trained soldiers are captured by the thousands by the cunning spiders, accomplishing little except to throw away lives.
44 Ed. - Crueltus assassinated by his eldest son, who ascends the throne as Emperor Severus.
45 Ed. - Severus moves to bring the vast Edunian military under his direct command, an ill-advised political maneuver which costs him allies and infuriates the Edunian aristocracy. Bloody civil wars erupt, ending with the death of Severus and the coronation of Emperor Terriblus. Terriblus immediately orders the termination of Severus' relations to the third degree, resulting in the execution of over ten thousand Mareten.
48 Ed. - Terriblus grants the secret police established under Crueltus widespread powers, including the authority to torture suspects without trial or conviction. Terriblus also orders many literary works put to the torch and halts education, restricting the lore of words only to official historians and scholars. Within two generations, much of the learning of Anfalas has vanished and mere literacy is often constituted as irrefutable proof of treason.
58 Ed. - Terriblus poisoned by a new Lian concubine in conspiracy with his younger brother. Once the brother ascends the throne as emperor Ultimato, he orders the faithless concubine executed by being fed to the dogs.
65 Ed. - Edunian dungeons established on the fringe of the Um'buru swamps for dissidents and opponents of the emperor's rule, there to be worked to death mining gold. Over the years, many citizens fleeing Edunian persecution settle in the dismal and unfriendly swamps of Um'buru.

The Elves, although long prepared for the invasion, are overwhelmed and driven back in spite of devastating losses incurred by the Edunian rabble. Bribed by the emperor with the dazzling riches of the empire, the Dwarves betray their pact by refusing to aid the Gold Elves.
105-212 Ed. - The Edunian years of conquest, one long and continuous war against the Dwarves, the orcs, and the other Mareten east of the Sunbirth mountains. While the Dwarves are never fully conquered, the Edunians occupy Chak Ram'thuk and enslave the Dwarven population while driving many of the Dwarves underground. Vast numbers of the Mareten are forced to submit to the Oath of Obedience, with the only significant resistance stemming from the Mareten tribes based in Sapphiras Vale and far eastern Falacaerr.
130? Ed. - Lost Edunian soldiers stumble upon the fey and try to exploit them, but the fairies imprison the soldiers and torture them into a more primal blood pact to never harm and always obey a fairy. These soldiers are released after seven years, seeded into the human population to slowly and insidiously spread the fairy curse through their bloodlines.

After five invasion attempts all repelled with severe losses, Emperor Karnagos finally gives up his plans of conquest.
212 Ed. - Fall of the last free Mareten resistance. To commemorate the victory, Emperor Savagas orders the execution of so many captives that "the plains became greasy from Mareten fat." Another legend arises that twenty thousand maidens flung themselves into the Windy Torrents rather than submit to the barbarity of their captors.

395 Ed. - Emperor Arrogus orders the establishment of Horizon's End to facilitate communication with distant parts of the empire, replacing the southern sea routes rendered too dangerous by the rise of the Kimeran sea pirates. In spite of heavy yearly losses in personnel and equipment to the predatory spiders of Abydor Woods, Horizon's End remains operational until the fall of the Edunian Empire.
404 Ed. - Emperor Implacus the Terrible coronated after seizing the crown from Arrogus. In preparation for war against the barbarians of the Surrakesh desert and the Moon elves of Norwood, Implacus decrees that all Mareten women between the ages of fifteen and forty in his empire must bare one child per year for the next twenty years, a measure which exponentially multiplies the population but results in the death of many mothers. The Rapine of Implacus goes down in history as one of the most odious acts ever imposed.
413 Ed. - Emperor Implacus appoints Serin Furinax and the Furinax family as the royal bodyguard.
415 Ed. - Implacus sends Archmage Ilsenya and his cohorts to found a magic research academy north of Faldir Cove, on the edges of the swamps of Um'buru. Here, forbidden magical research is carried out in secret.

531 Ed. - Coronation of Emperor Gluttonus the Great, whose reign is marked by the public and gruesome execution of thousands of his enemies in ostentatious ceremonies, by feeding them whole to predatory animals or plants. In the great amphitheatres of Evenstar and Caer Huin, victims were often chosen by lot from the crowd if the emperor wished for additional sacrifices.
535 Ed. - The Gold Elves of Ilfas vale rise in revolt after enduring years of seeing their loved ones fed to monsters for the emperor's amusement. The enraged emperor orders every last Gold Elf west of the Sunbirth mountains digested, and his orders are carried out with ruthless efficiency.
537 Ed. - Emperor Gluttonus holds Lian swallowing contests for the soldiers of his army, to horrendous effect upon the Lian population. To keep the Lian numbers replenished, many Mareten are shrunken on the flimsiest of pretences, and emperor repeats Implacus' decree to the Lian.
541 Ed. - Emperor Gluttonus dies from a fall in Evenstar castle. His flesh is sold in the market for 2 centithalers an ounce to the common people by his successor.
541-550 Ed. - Third Edunian civil war. During this time period, no fewer than fifteen emperors are crowned, none of whom rule more than a few months or die peacefully.
