When you say exclusive... Do you mean time based exclusive or do you mean paywall exclusive?
Posted by GokaiVore 9 years ago Report
paywall exclusive, as much as I wanted to avoid doing such a thing I realized I was going nowhere, and if I want to make a living my art I need to treat it like a business.

Well then. I guess I will take my briefcase full of non-existant cash and show myself the door. Good day.
P.S: I can get that, in a world where the workmarket is the way it is finding any way to sustain yourself would be a plus. But at least don't become a Nyte okay? Don't forget us lowly people with almost no disposable income that enjoyed your art for what it was.

the vast majority of my content is still going to be free for public. And I appreciate all my fans whether they can afford to give me a little something or not. That will never change.
I don't want to come off the wrong way but you should refrain from shaming artist for having paywalls. The vast majority of us would choose not to if it weren't so hard to make a living without them. I tried to go the non paywall way, it really doesn't go anywhere unless you are super popular because you have to rely on charity. Honestly if I can ever get to the point where I don't have to have a paywall, then I will probably drop it, because I like my art being shared and I like lots people seeing it. paywalls are very stigmatized but I don't think people ever think about how hard it is to survive without them. Almost every successful patreon has a paywall of some kind and there is a reason for that. Artist have a right to ask money for their work like any other thing, I don't think it should ever be shame. Yea it sucks to not being able to afford to see some of the art that the artist you enjoy make, I know this well myself as most the artists I know who have paywalls I can't afford them. I would never look down on them for it though.
Man this is getting lecturey fast, so I'll go ahead and pull back. Just know that I do appreciate you're interest in my art whether you can contribute financially or not. You contribute in a different you contribute on a more deep level. Without people who bother to comment and say their appreciation for my work, I'd have no motivation to do anything. So I'm eternally grateful to anyone who enjoys my work.
Thanks for enjoying my work <3

I'm not saying that you should not be allowed to have a paywall, what I am saying is that be a jerk about it and hide majority of it behind it and then delete all the art every so often as to force people to pay "right now" for it. There are better ways to handle older art (say artpacks for X ammount or the like) rather than outright delete it. So that the ones with unstable income or that actually gets an income can aquire it later.
When I asked Nyte about it the general feeling I got from them was they flipping me the bird on both hands while silently mouthing the words "fuck you" before walking backwards into the woods and disappearing.
Another thing about the patreon paywalls and such is that Patreon was never meant to be a way to paywall one's content. It was made for people to be able to contribute to their favorite (otherwise free) content creators. Seeing it being used as paywalls makes me kind of sad (at the creators of Patreon).
And one last question. Is there really that much of a market in the vore community to be able to fund dosens of different artists paywalling their stuff? I thought we was a relatively small and niche community with a multitude of different even nicher preferences.

Do people actually delete their old stuff in order to do that? That does seem quite underhanded, that I will not be doing that. I tend to never delete what I post, personal preference, I think its good to leave old stuff even if I think its bad now. The content I make for exclusive work, will be new stuff, and it will only be a small bit of what I actually do. Also there most likely going to be short comics, where as more my narrative driven vore comics are going to be free open to the public. (for instance the blog I posted about vore ideas those will all be free to public, though patrons will get early access)
Also I think it a bit inaccurate to say patreon was never meant for paywalls, since adding rewards for certain amounts is a paywall to begin with. I think Patreon was met to be very open so that creators could use it how they wanted, whether it be through paywalls or not.
Believe it or not small niche markets is where the moneys at. Bigger markets tend to be harder to work with because their is a ton of competition and generally over saturated. So unless you are really super good or just know how to get attention it isn't the easiest.

Depends on how niche. You need to get enough people to actually earn something. You got nearly $200 from 7 patrons which is pretty amazing in and off itsself but yeah... 7 patrons is not a whole lot.
And you do have competition even in this lottle niche space. Remember those dosens or so artists? They are your competition. Otherwise it would be like saying Mac-Donalds and Burger-King are not competators. Small niche markets is only where the money is when there is no competition, which there is a crapton off in the vore community (because of the ease of use of patreon).
Also one question, how much of those 200 dollars does Patreon take? 5%? 10%? 15%? A flat rate?
Posted by GokaiVore 9 years ago Report
its a small percentage the amount they show on the page actually includes the fee taken out. It also doesn't include the patrons that declined at the start of the month. SO its much more accurate then use to be.
I realize there is competition, but ya know you don't get anywhere by backing out. I can tell you I make more money in the vore community then I do in a more general hentai community which is what I focused on before. Because even though there are a lot of vore artist its still not as over saturated. We'll see how this goes. I'm not against trying new things and making mistakes is part of learning, yet to know if this is one or not.

I getcha. Good to knos that the number they list is what the creator gets. It makes me feel a little bit at ease for patreon.
On a completely unrelated note: Know any good ways to combat procrastination? I want to get better at drawing myself (Don't worry, I'm not going to compete with ya. I'm not even allowed to earn more than 8% of a yearly wage before they start cutting down on my current form of income). I know the best way to get better is to simply sit down and keep drawing, but I tend to keep procrastinating all the time. Oh youtube, Dota, Hearthstone. Why do you do this to me?

other then just pushing through it no, sometimes I suck on peppermint to help me focus, or drink tea.
