V quick doodles of a wing re-design for my vampire character Bell. She originally had pretty stereotypical bat wings that sprouted from her shoulder blades, but i wondered if she could instead have the ability to grow her fingernails out really long (which is something corpses can do) and they would act as supporting struts for wings composed of billowing dark smoky energy.

Holy.... wow that's a neat idea.
Also I do NOT want to be on the wrong end of those nails.

Actually the idea hair and fingernails grow after death is pure myth. Just like all other biological functions, hair and fingernail growth rely on cell processes, which all cease upon death.

I did a little reading into that right after posting this, and that was the conclusion I came to too! I think it'd make in-universe sense, though, for that particular myth to develop based on vampires' ability to do it.
Also I'm honored that I'm the first to get a comment from you in the time you've been on here! ><

The myth comes from the fact that sometimes early in the process of decomposition, the skin recedes, making it *look* like hair and nails are growing. Also, hair and nails appearing to have grown after death was one of several normal parts of decay that were interpreted in some parts of the world as signs a corpse had become a vampire. Mostly certain European countries, but also in the infamous 'New England vampires' events, though it's generally agreed /those/ were simply an epidemic of TB mixed with a bit of hysteria.
