When humans first started settling new planets, their colony ships had difficulty transporting a stable population in one run. After the first few failed attempts to start a colony the settlers turned to a secondary method of maintaining stable population through genetic modification and physiological adaptation. Female volunteers were genetically modified for a pseudo-immortality that would allow them to continue reproducing well into their second century of life. These volunteers were also physiologically modified to allow them to carry several different sets of embryos and fetuses at different stages of development and give birth at the appropriate time for each set. Two initial difficulties arose from these first modifications: the first being that with such an enormous burden the mothers were permanently bedridden rendering their intellectual capacity the only meaningful contribution to the colony. The second problem became apparent when a colony mother had failed to conceive during one cycle and her body still attempted to give birth at the appropriate time after her menstruation cycle.

The scientists involved in the project carefully considered the problems and the necessary solutions until they came up with a rather ingenious one. The problem of muscular and skeletal stress on the mother could be alleviated by providing additional muscles and an additional skeletal support structure. The problem of reproductive consistency could be solved if the mother could conceive automatically every month. The final solution proposed was to symbiotically bond a male and female body utilizing the enhanced muscular and skeletal support of the male body to alleviate most of the symptoms of the female body and permanently bonding the sexual organs allowed the colony mother to reliably conceive on a monthly cycle.

The final process used in the creation of a colony mother involved liquefying most of the skeletal structure of the female body then surgically grafting the major muscle groups onto their corresponding parts of the male body. An unexpected byproduct of the liquefication process softened the female's skull allowing the grafts to include binding the female head and brain over the male skull unexpectedly meshing the two neural structures. While the male personality was subsumed by the female personality an analysis of neural activity found that the pleasure from the continuous sexual union predominately affected the male brain. A few months after the initial prototypes of this union were finalized, the analyses showed that the female and male brains could inter-communicate to a degree that increased their combined IQ dramatically. The ability to multitask became more pronounced in the colony mothers especially if the male brain were engaged with manual labor while the female brain concentrated on intellectual pursuits.

Most colony mothers conceived exactly 2 babies every month and modified their milk so that the infants could grow to be weaned by the time the next set was born. Some colony mothers would go in for additional modifications such as extra breasts which would allow them to feed more infants at a time, additional bodies to increase pleasure and/or mental capacity, or even additional sexual organs so that they could "socialize" with the uninitiated. Colony mothers were revered and respected throughout the colony worlds both for their intellect and their reproductive capability. Even in the more advanced worlds - later in human development - they were still prominent figures and often surrogates for traditional couples.
