They had been hired to investigate on a string of disappearances, several tourists going missing in the jewel of north-east Italy: Venice.
The local police didnt seem to be able to pull off any kind of results, But they were different, being able to get in contact with a local rich girl that filled their ears with stories about secret cults and sacrifices, she was willing to tell the whole story in the privacy of her personal gondola.
What seemed a good start to a carrer changing case, was cut short by a quick struggle, and a triumphant feminine belch, as what turned out to be a kitsune relaxed in her boat, happily taunting the detective as her stomach started preparing to do its morbid job.
In the end, it was just a girl and her hunger that had caused all of that, and not some convoluted conspiracy theory. Case solved! whilist the poor detective slowly dissolved within the fox's engorged gut.

Long story: some venetian dude sailed with a bunch of portuguese bois to the far east to buy some dank af spices, and somewhere around china/japan/korea he ended up buying a little fox pup as a pet, too bad after a few months that little fox started speaking (much like that goofy "chaos reign" fox) and calling him dad, so instead of tossing that literal demon overboard he adopted her, and so his family ended up with a magic fox matriarch.

On a more serious note: fuck you venice, florentian pride worldwide
