Pacha's Quest v4.5 By BizzareBlue -- Report

Hi everyone.

It took longer than I was hoping but the newest version of Pacha’s Quest is finally ready. This update focused on adding content to existing areas so most of the new content is in Patreon only areas, however to make up for that most of the west side of Traders Town is now being made available in the free version. There’s also a nightmare difficulty mode. I have no idea why anyone would want this as it was a struggle just beating the mice in the starting area on it, but if you enjoy lots of grinding and added difficulty it’s there for you.

I know the story doesn't advance much in this update as it was more intended to fill in some gaps left by pushing forwards too quickly, but I'm going to resume focus on that in the next one.

Ooh, excellent! I can't wait to give it a shot! Though....yeah, I probably will give Nightmare Mode a pass, that's never been my thing.

Yeah, it’s not my thing either. I am not fond of having to grind to get through a game so have tried to make it so very little of that is needed.

Congratulations on finishing this update! It was certainly long-awaited, and I'll give it a run-through as soon as possible!

Thank you for sharing your hard work and vision! Particularly happy to learn there is will be a seal settlement to explore -- I was wondering if that ambassador was a promise of something greater coming up!

She wasn’t initially planned to be, but the more I thought about it, the more I wanted to include some more seal characters.

Sampled nearly every new addition, save for the extra difficult mode and the Harak's vore command interactions, and it's all fantastically well-done, as always surpassing my highest expectations!

My hopes for the seal ambassador opening up a way to more seal-related events were partly fueled by my affection for the species, and the character's memorably audacious greeting, I admit. Now that I've seen the seal island, it is a very unusual environment, densely packed with things to do -- great work on that whole segment! The admittance cost incentivizes money management; the inclusion of the diving part extends the present of the related mechanic with is very nice and elegantly conceived, and leads to the new pearl token exchange system offering unique items, which are always welcome in RPG's; the further explanation of the diplomatic situation between the otters and the seals was good to learn, and well presented through integrated storytelling; the conversation at the shrine felt very important and illuminating about the how different gods view their relationship with mortals, and each other, especially with Sichi present.

The seal culture is very interesting and not what I could have expected, but the libertarian beach bum ethos was a pleasant surprise all the same; they would have made a good match for the similarly anarchic avian tribes up to the North-West, if their shared traits didn't make them averse to alliance-building -- or any dedicated organizing, really.

The pirate characters and the associated questline are superb, from the sliding and smashing bottle animation, to the music at the harbor tavern, to the fight and the flavorful combat dialogue, to the relocation of the defeated due to the guest beds, to the handsome verses with clues. A lovely addition overall, even discounting the wonderful exported artwork, and the fact that it directs all the players who might have missed the sunken wreck and the cemetery shrine towards those out of the way adventures.

Meeri's newly expanded role in the Hive's internal affairs is very welcome, especially if it revealed the drones' place in the Hive's matriarchal society. Lots of delightful worldbuilding, all around, with the Queen's scribe becoming a part of a deeper, richer community as a result. I appreciated that Pacha observed on the bees' carnivorous side when convincing Meeri to join the cannibal club. Didn't have the nerve to try out the altar experiment just yet, leaving that extremely unreasonable choice to be taken on sometime later.

Harak's home turf is very distinctive, and fits the character perfectly, while also allowing for very exciting emergent gamaplay with the stalking mechanic. Haven't done a run with Harak in the team yet, and I'm impatient to try that out.

The new artwork is great in volume and quality, both for the existing assets getting an update, and for the entirely new ones! So much wonderful new content! It more that accounts for the waiting, and brings even more promise what the game could deliver in the future! Sichi's new expressions have greatly enhanced the character's delivery, Harak's graphics are charming on all levels, the lizard caravaner's new look works better without sacrificing any of the previously appreciated pleasantness; the drone's frazzled mad scientist look is very apt; the sprite for Seal Girl is exceptionally dynamic and graceful.

Will definitely come back later with new impressions on what I've yet to discover!

Thank you for your hard work and cunning inventions!

Thanks. I’m glad you’re still enjoying the game and the new content.

Yeah… the seal island ended up a little crowded after I’d finished fiddling with it, but that’s definitely a better problem that having it come across as too sparse. Libertarian beach bums does sum up their outlook quite well. Out of all the different tribes, they are probably the ones with the easiest life given both their place in the food chain and the easy supply of fish and other prey. Ulm was actually part of the reason this update took so long. I kept tweaking her dialogue to try to get it right, but it kept coming out wrong. I’m still not very happy with it. I think maybe the problem was that I started with a clear idea of what she should sound like, but not what interacting with her should do.

The pirate quest was very fun to work on. I can’t take credit for the dialogue though. Jeschke wrote pretty much all of that for me. The tavern music is also just one of the default pieces that came with rpgmaker.

Meeri was definitely overdue a chance to become a predator, especially given that all the other bees get that ability, and the drones are something I’d wanted to add for ages. I was very sorry they ended up getting cut from the bees update and glad they are in now. Probably safest not to let the crazy bee with an altar experiment on you though.

Glad you liked Harak as well, and I hope the maze leading to him was not too tricky. It’s hard to determine the difficulty after designing the route through it, so I couldn’t easily tell if it was too hard or too easy and was worried I might have made it a little frustrating.

I do feel like I’m getting better at drawing content for this game. New battle sprites certainly take less time than they used to if nothing else, and I was very pleased with how the seal girl came out as well. Too often when I’m trying to draw a new enemy they end up standing with one leg in front of the other, holding a weapon or casting a spell in one hand and with the other on their hips, so it was nice to have some characters who could be in very different postures for a change.

Writing gods will always be a daunting task, I think, and with Ulm you done everything humanly possible to characterize her as otherworldly, with the goddess' cautious awareness of the other deities on whose toes she might tread by getting involved in the mortal affairs, her wavering between indignation and bemusement when confronted with a defiant Pacha, and her detached, but attentive attitude towards the seals. It will be tremendously exciting to see other deities in the game world be given a similarly nuanced treatment!

Ulm and the seal tribe are well matched, and behave in a way consistent with their outlook, and I enjoyed every aspect of navigating the island and its shallows. I would still like to share an idea I'd had for the seal society from back when the ambassador was the only hint at its possible workings, but I emphatically don't want to set it against the way the seal island was designed, which I love. In my imagining of the seal culture, I saw them embracing the duality that real life seals have, simultaneously being successful dedicated predators, and the food source for larger predators -- an arrangement that's very different from how terrestrial carnivores of comparable size, like wolves, have with other animals; in my concept, while seals will object to being eaten as much any other tribe, they are also take a more relaxed view on the whole food chain thing, and will as soon casually joke about eating someone as muse about how appealing they would be as a prey, or play along with other predators' threats, often throwing the latter off balance. This behavior would frame the ambassador's voracious greeting as less of a boisterous (albeit well-humored) provocation, and more how seals are used to interacting with each other and everyone else. This also stems heavily from my personal preferences less contentions vore interactions and flirting, and it would clash with the harsher shade of predation that the story makes such an excellent use of.

While I appreciate you giving Jeschke their due credit for their outstanding contribution, your game still accommodates this quest, and it both tightly woven into the game world, and stylistically a close fit, and besides the difference in art style, feels like it fully belongs in the game.

As for the sprites, there is a great diversity of poses and stances showcased by the enemies in combat, and this dedication to creative novelty is thoroughly appreciated! Underwater is where the an artist can go wild with poses, it's true.

It is also impressive how you managed to cram two Spiderlings into the frame along with Harak, that fight feels very big even if the party outclasses the spider rogue.

Oh, and Harak's lines and personality are enjoyable, too -- a good addition for the Pacha and Vir team of unapologetically ravenous characters, perhaps even darker in tone than the other two, and certainly less gregarious and civilized; and he's a good foil to the outwardly nice and trusting demeanor of Irci's.

I've only briefly tried the new difficulty, and it's certainly doable, but very challenging even for a full party, which is the point of it. The increased experience rewards seemed appropriate, and if I may offer, a reduction in the enemy durability might also help making the necessary grinding process less frustrating; enemy offensive power, on the other hand, could be boosted a little to compensate, making for more intense, but also quicker skirmishes. But then, I haven't gotten much farther than the starting area, so my opinions are bound to change with more play time.

Thank you making such a quick bug-fixing overhaul of the new update!

Apologies for taking so long to reply!

the naga's seems to have stop dealing any acid damage, also weight gain seems to have completely stopped working, but otherwise, i'm having a blast with the new location and nightmare mode, i was also suprised by sichi new faces, even shocked but they do add a little bit of emotion to the walls of text, now i just wish there was more of thoses, you're doing a good job :)

i also found a softlock with the special dialogue from nihata if you kill the queen frog before she attacks him, and beat the dryad

Egothe3rd

Posted by Egothe3rd 2 years ago Report

ok,i remove what i sayed about weight gain not working, it just seems to be deactivated until after the dryad has been beaten

BizzareBlue

Posted by BizzareBlue 2 years ago Report

Thanks for catching all of those. I’ll look into what’s causing them and try to get them fixed soon. And yeah, I was eventually planning to add more expressions for the other recruitable characters as well, but Sichi got priority, partly because her default cheerful expression tended to clash with a lot of her dialogue.

Egothe3rd

Posted by Egothe3rd 2 years ago Report

ok, now i see the "problem" if it's one, because before i could easily reach max weight with my characters, but now all they seem to be able to reach is the mid-level(lean/average), even when i feed only one with multiple enemies and try to force it before going to sleep.

Egothe3rd

also, if you want to understand us, masochist, the philosophy we have behind harder game, is that we like our fights to be more meaningful, impactful, you know just like a boss fight, when you get that kill and you see a level up, you get that treasure you seek so much, or you finally get to enjoy the next part of the story. the fighting difficulty is fine right now, i do feel like the mouse warrior are actually worth something and not just free meat, or money generator, when they counter me, or deal more then 1/100th of my hp, but maybe you should upgrade the exp and money gained for each enemy, so that it doesn't turn into a grind-fest. altrough not for bosses , otherwise it would just become a "better rewards" gamemode

by the way, is there any way to convict the naga legally and doing the job asked by the librarian without the need of an assasination? i would like to not be banned from the village permanently, or at the very least not be made the public enemy N°1 (that was also a great idea to add the seals to the underwater part, it made the zone a bit more alive)

BizzareBlue

Posted by BizzareBlue 2 years ago Report

Hmmmm… I’ll have to look into that and see what could be causing it. I was actually planning to make a few more changes to the weight gain system soon anyway. The current system seems to make it far too easy for character to lose weight and while gaining it isn’t hard, maintaining it can be annoying.

That’s actually a really good explanation. I’m glad you’re enjoying the added challenge though. I’ve also taken your suggesting and as well as the bug fixes I’m making nightmare mode give an extra 50% xp from enemies defeated in it. I left the gold amounts untouched though. I also haven’t managed to find the softlock caused by Nahata yet. I’ll keep looking into that.

As for the alchemist, there are currently two ways to resolve that quest, and only one of them involves killing her. You might need to poke around a little in some of the other houses to find the alternative solution though.

no problem, i have lots of fun playing this game with all the possible interactions, i also found another bug, when going to the water section after having beaten the medusa, the male seal transform into a female seal when it eats someone

BizzareBlue

Posted by BizzareBlue 2 years ago Report

Hmmm... that's a weird bug. I can't find anything that looks like it could be causing it. Did it happen when fighting a male seal alone, or when facing two of them together? Also, did they transform immediately eating a character, or when they finished digesting that character?

Egothe3rd

Posted by Egothe3rd 2 years ago Report

it happened when facing it alone, and instantly after eating it, the text box turns to the female version even before the eating transition...wait you can fight two at the same time!?

but otherwise i didn't see any other problem, you did a god job with this update :)

Is there any way to get the changelog either also posted here, or appended to the game install/download.

BizzareBlue

Posted by BizzareBlue 2 years ago Report

Um… I haven’t really got a changelog. The added content in the free version is mostly just nightmare mode and access to the western half of Traders Town, unless I’m forgetting something. The added content for the Patreon version is a new area east of the otter’s village, Harak’s lair near the hive, and a new area inside the hive.

Hello, can I get help with the Naga Alchemist investigation. I'm not sure on how to convict her. Is there a hint in the forest or can you just help me?

BizzareBlue

Posted by BizzareBlue 2 years ago Report

There are two ways to solve the naga’s quest. One involves finding a way to assassinate her quietly so she can’t call the guards for help. The other involves poking around in some of the other houses to find out a little more about what is going on. Also, if you go down the route of trying to get rid of her quietly, you might want to start by getting permission to fiddle with her alchemy equipment and see what potions you can make.
