Hello everyone! Sorry I haven’t been updating as much lately, life’s been up and down. I’ve had a tough time finding motivation to work on, well, anything and so my projects have all slowed down. I got a lot of “in-progress” pieces that need finishing, but those may take time and I apologize for that.

In honor of MerMay, I wanted to upload a picture of some characters I’ve been working on, though only one is a mermaid. The other is a succubus who’s part spider, also known as a spinner.

Let’s start with her first. Vanessa (1), is a succubus who is part silver argiope, a small type of orb weaver spider whose silk can take on many different forms, some of which are fibrous. Which is great for Vanessa, because she’s a tailor! Long ago, when she was trapped inside a log cabin in the middle of a bad winter Vanessa discovered that she could weave her silk into clothes. This not only provided her with a much-needed source of warmth but also led to her establishing her own store, called V’s Emporium (logo pictured as ). Open seasonally, the store is run by Vanessa and is frequented by predators who want clothes that won’t instantly rip the minute they devour someone.

Fun fact: Vanessa’s first victims were a group of German immigrants. As a result, she adopted a Hessian accent believing that all humans sounded like that. She kept it even after finding out that it was false because she liked the accent.

Then there’s “Queen” Balyena (2), a powerful mermaid whose origins are unknown. What is known is that she came to Earth in 1964, got her name as a result of Filipino tourists yelling “whale” in Tagalog and she resembles a humpback whale, albeit much smaller (12ft vs. 52ft) and lighter (⅓ a ton vs. 30 short tons). Like humpbacks, she has a powerful voice, one that rivals (or perhaps, is equal to) a siren’s song. Also like humpbacks, Balyena possesses a unique fluke (4), which sports damage she sustained in a fight with a succubus who was part oceanic white tip.

Fun fact: Balyena’s “Queen” title isn’t a reflection of royalty but rather, is used in the same way the word “King” is used in “Kingsnake”. It was bestowed upon her by Vanessa when she learned of the incident with the oceanic whitetip.

In case you’re wondering, (5) was going to be an incubus character I never got around to properly drawing aside from a head and ears. He’ll get love sometime in the future since I plan on making him an important character in an upcoming tale.

That’s all for now, sorry again for being so quiet. Hope y’all have an awesome day, thanks for reading!
