Pacha's Quest v5.1 BugFix By BizzareBlue -- Report

Bugfixes already... admittedly only in the patreon version. The mantis pred caused a crash after being defeated, and one of the books in the sparrow's library was not working properly, both should be fixed now.

The dropbox version is missing, and the mediafire version seems to be the patreon 5.0 (or at least I assume it's not 5.1 since the mantises still crash it when defeated/leaving)

I couldn't even enter the mouse village w/o the game crashing instantly. Definitely not good.

BizzareBlue

Posted by BizzareBlue 3 years ago Report

Yeah, that is definitely a problem. Does it give you any kind of error message when it crashes?

BizzareBlue

Posted by BizzareBlue 3 years ago Report

That is 5.1 but the mantises still seem to be broken even in that version. I’ve changed some more stuff now and I think they should be working in version 5.2 (or at least, I really hope so). And ooops. That was a stupid mistake to make. It should also be fixed now.

Ok...so...like wow!

Like really really wow!!!

Let me just say that it's so easy to see that this is a real labor of love. I sat down to play this game for the very first time today....and here I am 12 hours of game play later absolutely spellbound by your writing <3

There is just so much that I am loving about this game and I haven't even made it through all of the playable content yet!

Every single potential party member has such a clear and distinct personality that really sets them apart from everybody else. And I've absolutely fallen head over heels for Sichi~
The dynamic you've created between that little mousey and Pacha is just such a delightful teeter totter back and forth between food and friend as Sichi slowly begins to trust the stoat and eventually grow more confident in herself! She hasn't left my side throughout my playthrough so far, and now she's ended up my strongest party member at level 31! I'm sssoooo proud of her =^.^=

The raw amount of dialogue and interactions you've written in for all of these characters is astonishing too! Everywhere I go, every new character I stumble across, even the random battle NPCs will throw out new contextual lines that comment on the specific people I have in my party which really helps to make the entire world feel so alive!

And don't even get me started on the wonderfully unique main story line you've created! Without spoiling anything, you've managed to really make me feel like there is a reason why I'm going around gobbling people up! So many vore games fall into the trap of "well this is a vore game so you just vore people and that's the way things are." But you've managed to craft a world filled with rich lore and species dynamics! The villain has real depth to their character and their goals, and you've so expertly woven this story to make it so that predators like Pacha actually have believable reasons to be going on this quest, while at the same time, even the prey characters have believable reasons why they would side with Pacha.

On top of all the amazing story telling and character personalities, you've done such a fun job with the actual game mechanics too! Every battle I get into is always tense because there is a real risk that I could lose Sichi or any of my other favorite party members. Just a few wrong moves and they could just be gone, the way you really hammer home the permanence of vore in this universe just makes me melt >///>

You really do just an amazing job of getting me as the player to go through emotional roller coasters too! One moment I'll be riding high, proud to be a predator gobbling up someone who wronged me, and then the next, I'll be biting my nails as I debate what to do with the characters I've run into. Should I let them go free? Snarf them down? Do they deserve it? How do they treat my friends? I only just recently finished an interaction with an owl character that had me saving and reloading again and again as I flip flopped back and fourth between what path I wanted to take. No matter what path I took, I constantly felt "dirty" and like I was somehow in the wrong...stuck between a rock and a hard place...with no "right" answer...You did this to me with a VORE GAME!

To cap it all off, you've clearly put ssooo much time and effort into all the little character art and assets! I absolutely love every little face you've drawn. All the little expressions, the cute little sprites as they walk about...those little bloated bellies when the pred's tummies are full of prey....and all of the enemy sprites that you fight throughout the game!

I absolutely can not gush over this game enough!
You've obviously put ssooo much time and effort into this project and it really shows. Thank you so SO much for gifting our community with such a fun, interesting, and compellingly vorney game to play! I can't wait to play through the rest of the story and find out what happens next! I want to see how Sichi continues to develop and I am so excited to discover what other unique characters I might stumble across next~

Wow, thank you. I have to admit, Sichi is kind of a favorite of mine as well and I have to remind myself to not let her hog all the dialogue in the game and allow the others to react to things instead… although admittedly in this update she pretty much got free reign to steal the center position.

I'm really glad you're enjoying the npcs and the setting as well. Permadeath settings with getting eaten being just about the scariest thing that can happen to someone is something I find really fun as well, and I'll admit that the owl was one of the little side quests I was most pleased with.

Very glad to hear how much you're enjoying it so far, and hopefully I'll be able to keep that up in the next update. Thanks again for all the encouragement.

Interacting with anyone in the Mouse Village automatically causes the game to crash.

Script 'Game_Interpreter' line 450: NoMethodError occured.
undefined method 'visiblePath' for #<Game_Map:0xc033bec>

I believe you may have accidentally posted the wrong version on MediaFire, and the Dropbox link is empty. That said, I enjoy the game, and would very much like to see it complete one day. Please remember to update the links in the forum, so a lot more people can enjoy your hard work's product. :)

That is a very strange bug to be getting. Some people are clearly able to access the mouse village without problem so it seems to be an intermittent bug and I can’t see anything that would be causing something like that to happen. Could you try downloading the files again and sending Pacha to sleep in an inn before trying to enter the mouse village a second time? I’m really not sure what else could be causing something like that to happen.

Once again I'm amazed! I have to admit, I looked through the code, and it's insane the amount of time and effort you've put into this update. I think it took me about 3 or so hours at least to read through the new content, so it boggles my mind the amount of time you must have put in!
I really appreciate the niche situations you still account for, it's incredible.
Cruelty and betrayal are something I like in preds, so I really liked (and I'm trying to avoid spoilers) the way Pacha could go about angering someone very powerful, and the trade with the mantis.
The instant digestion and implied disposal were also quite nice, I think it was enough to appeal to that aspect without being too much, so nice work!
Overall, it was well worth the wait. The only downside is now there's a wait for more content, but such is life. I'd probably prefer shorter waits with less content, but it's up to you of course.

Thanks, I’m glad you’re still enjoying it, and yeah… I quite like adding dialogue that only crops up if the player does something exceptionally strange. Very nice work on figuring out how to reach the tricky optional boss, although if your party was powerful enough to win that, there probably isn’t going to be many challenging fights in the rest of the game.

I’m definitely hoping the next update will not take quite as long as this one. I may have got a little overambitious with a few of the things I tried to add in it to be honest. The next area will hopefully focus more on art and dialogue and less on fiddling with the code to make rpgmaker do things it wasn’t really designed for, so hopefully should be a little quicker.

Another note: at present, and I could be wrong, I think it's impossible to LEAVE the mouse village once you get there. A hole reopens so I can't backtrack, and there's no crystal lying around to circumvent that!

That said, I believe I've...consumed...the update, snake and all. Very, very nice work as always!

I found a way around that problem if you press q to restart it will take you back to the cave filled with shadow bats.

Kasra

Oh, genius! That didn't even occur to me for some reason.

BizzareBlue

Posted by BizzareBlue 3 years ago Report

Ah, yeah, I really should have spotted that. I’ve shifted things around a little now so that that shouldn’t happen anymore. I never spotted that problem while testing it because, when trying to get back from the mouse village, I always got impatient and either pressed q or got squished to skip through that map. There was also supposed to be a teleport crystal in the village but it got cut when I realized the mouse village was getting out of hand.

Sorry about that. I've sent you the plain zipped file now. Hopefully that should solve it, but if not let me know and I'll try to work out what is going wrong. Also, do you remember what the error message said? That might help me work out why things went wrong.

I encountered a crash in this version - when I went through the hive eating everybody, after I ate the queen and tried to enter the area to the west, the game crashed with a message along the lines of "couldn't find BeeWorker." It worked fine in the playthrough where I didn't fight the queen.

This game is SO fun so far, I'm really enjoying it! I love how many different options there are, and how easily things can be altered if you decide to eat certain people. I started it the other day and ate Martin and Sichi without thinking about it, but restarted and had them join my party once I realized that might be helpful, and I'm amazed at how easily I would have missed Martin's whole character if I hadn't gone back. The story is also really compelling! I'm really excited to continue playing it!

BizzareBlue

Posted by BizzareBlue 3 years ago Report

Thank you and yeah, allowing the story to continue regardless of which characters survive, especially Martin, was one of the things I wanted to work into this from the start.

chewchulainn

Posted by chewchulainn 3 years ago Report

It’s a really great mechanic! I’m a fan of branching paths and things being altered depending on your actions/how you treat characters, so I’m really excited to see how the story goes depending on who you have with you. It’s a lot of fun ^^

Finally got round to giving the new version today, and first time I moved an old save, game's getting long to restart from scratch every time... though soon I may need to try an, empty party, full belly run.

So, I had a couple bugs. One for the mantis, a crash if my characters wiggled free of its swallow. And fittingly the centipede too, it used an ability called bat whistle I think... which crashed the game. And a third when talking to felgate in the temple, sichi in party.
Not sure if it's due to the save move but, the vore move doesn't seem to work anymore? Says it cannot find a predator.
Also, once I had Sichi, enhanced, I tried to get through the fire and it didn't work.. I know there's nothing beyond it, but, after she... erm, got better aquainted with a passing naga, I went to see if her deity had anything to say about it... which she didn't. The amulet I was given though, that worked on the fire so, it made me think Sichi was supposed to, work.
I also ended, trapped in the mouse village. I saw someone mention being literally trapped in the village, for me it was more, I headed back, and the puzzles had all completely reset. The holes I filled weren't filled anymore so... I had no way back. Had to revert to a previous save... luckily I had a lot of those, as crash ointment.

Otherwise largely enjoyed the new content. It was interesting to finally hear the goal of our mad mage. And it, makes a certain sort of sense in a villian sort of way. Some of its more obvious holes explored in the dialogue at the temple, which was nice to see. Wondering if anyone will also question the legitimacy of this supposed herbivore utopia, and how they'll handle population control... also what they'll do with any, omnivorous species... since they kinda don't fit into either solution. The new puzzles, one of them had me stumped for a while... and your, rolling mazes are a headtwister. That being said, while I find the new enemies in the jungle, interesting ideas, they were no fun. Mostly because, in my opinion, puzzle zones and prolonged fight enemies don't mix. I'm trying to figure out a rock puzzle, where any wrong move means starting again... and the sticky plant pops up. I need to go through the long dialogue again, going slow since the default is to put yourself in swallowing range... which means when the fight finally starts it takes longer to hit escape, and I'm going to hit escape, because they shower you with so, so many debuffs, and worse, several different flavours of turn cancelling debuff... which is fine in itself, very challenging, but it makes fighting them dangerous and slow. The... new retry button seems op, but also, that whole area would have been an impassable ordeal without it. If it was me... I'd either keep them away from the puzzle zones, or lower the battle frequency there, because the constant interruptions when trying to think are... frustrating beyond belief.

Still, glad to see you're still going with this, kinda excited to see what comes next. If I were to make any suggestions, it would be nice, if a rational reason exists... for some sort of, predator collection, a way to trigger battles with the predatory beasts for scene finding. Also, perhaps, a little touch of quality over quantity with some of the devouring moments. Still, some of the multiple phase ones of the early game are my favourites, for the critters. Though generally if Pacha wants to eat someone, it's a teasing line of "yeah... you're getting eaten" in one form or anouther, a swallow sound, and that's the last you hear of it. Which has a certain pleasing finality... but is very brief.

Yeah, playthroughs from the start are getting time consuming. That’s starting to be a problem for playtesting as well, which is part of the reason so many bugs slipped through in this version. Quite a few things worked fairly well when tested on their own, but caused problems if the player runs into them after playing through the rest of the game.

I think all those bugs should be fixed now. Yeah, Sichi was definitely supposed to let you through into the fire mountains if she’s high priest when you approach, but it wasn’t working. As for getting stuck in the mouse village, the blocks and holes are supposed to reset each time you enter the screen, but I hadn’t realized that made the puzzle unsolvable when returning. I’ve added another bolder now which should make that puzzle solvable from either side.

Glad you’re enjoying the new content… and yeah, the villain’s masterplan does have a few gaping holes in it. Maybe if he had spent a few more years polishing and working out the details it might have had a better chance of succeeding but, as a rage-fueled act of revenge, it’s supposed to sound a little hastily planned.

Also… sorry about the puzzle area. The area was at least partly inspired by a similar puzzle in a game called nethack, but I can see why it just comes across as frustrating in this. I’ve significantly toned down the frequency of enemies in those areas now and also swapped the sundew’s dialogue around so refusing to trust her is now the default option.

A place to refight previous enemies does sound interesting. I’m not sure quite how to include that in the game, but I’ll definitely look into it as it would be pretty fun. I’ll also bear that in mind with the predator dialogue.

DrakeZephyr

Posted by DrakeZephyr 3 years ago Report

I wanted to say that I didn't mind the puzzles being tricky, I think I would have felt more, challenged than frustrated if not for the enemies. Naturally mantis crashes resetting me a bit, and pushing through the sundews while, ehe, fighting to figure out the puzzle was a little much for me. But the puzzles I like. Almost completely missed the mouse village though, forgetting the stairs to it were, accessable by just going down.
Also wanted to note I don't mind the villain's plan having a hole or two. It, seems very fitting for a villian plan. It kinda works in theory, till you think about it, and someone driven a bit mad is expected to not look at the finer details. Part of me is kinda hoping there'll be an option eventually to, well, if you've been sparing your potential party members and... ahem, teaching them that herbivore is just a word, apparently, that you can thrust that forward as a... hole in his utopia plan. Honestly, as I said, it's a very fitting villain plan. Didn't see it coming, but it made sense when I heard it, but, has enough holes to keep you feeling the hero in the situation, while not being so immediately obvious holes that you'd think... he has to have thought of that. The holes are, the sort you could see a deranged guy overlooking in the moment... and it tied in well with the situation with the mice, gave them a hole to try and plug, etc.

As for the idea about a refight zone... yes, I did hesitate on, how possible it was. Collusium was my first thought but... so far I don't see a sensible place for that, unless there's an aggressive breed of prey in the future who could conceivably be penning creatures to watch fight as both entertainment, and proof to themselves that flesh eaters are just violent beasts, and they are better... for watching not doing.
If such a breed of prey existed in your plans... such could fit their, self righteous mindset perhaps. Otherwise, concievably you could, maybe, have a predator type who has... for the sake of pleasure, developed a method to help other predators remember vividly previous pleasant meals as a frame for such things... or possibly a dreaming option, cliche as it is. Just idea dumping. Anyway, looking forward to what comes next... hope the rest of the lizards are at least partially as cute as the one we get to.. resist eating. Hoping to see hum turn pred in time, he'd be a funny one...

Thank you so much for the titanic amount of effort and thought that this update represents!

The parts leading up to Araya's Temple are diverse, and are just enough of a gauntlet to feel the relief both after reaching the Temple, and after securing it later on. The Temple's interior design and layout is thoroughly enjoyable, sensible and fitting.

The dialogue for that part features some of the most circumspect and well thought out writing in the game so far, which is a high watermark as it is. The portrayal of deities' detached way of thinking is just a terrific feat of conceptualizing the alien, in a way that would still make sense when it is made to coexist with the (relatively) mundane.

The original High Priest's scheme builds on the previous deveopments of the plot ever so smoothly, and it is conveyed so reasonably that during the respective part of the game I was compelled to support, or at least applaud that course, even while acknowledging the ghastliness of the scheme's consequences for the carnivorous protagonists.

Sichi's (optional, owing to the wonderous and hard-won modality of gameplay) role in the Temple part is magnificent, too; every aspect of it is superbly done: her crisis of faith, her overcoming her prejudice towards Ti, her confrontation with her superiors, her long-awaited communing with her patron goddess, and her dietary anxieties.

The addition of the library at the sparrow village felt huge in terms of gameplay and better representation of prey species in the game world; the inclusion of history of the ruined carnivore empire was a much appreciated treat, too.

Still far from exhausting the fullness of the update's content, but I've been putting off writing this for far too long already.

Thank you! Thank you for your labor, and for sharing your boundless creativity! You have kept so many people on this site entertained and gotten so many minds thinking!

Glad you liked it. The temple and finally meeting Araya has been one of the parts I’ve been most eager to add since starting the game. Araya was more challenging to add than I’d expected though once I actually started writing her. I guess one of the odd quirks of writing a game is that anyone in a position of power has to have a reason to either be indifferent or antagonistic towards the hero, or to have some reason for only offering very limited help to the player. The other leaders Pacha has encountered have their own reasons for taking a fairly hands-off approach despite the potentially apocalyptic consequences of doing so, but Araya was more of a problem as she clearly has both the motive and resources to take a more active role in stopping The Tunneler so she needs a slightly alien perspective in order for Pacha to remain as the main character… and possibly to not object too strongly to Pacha, and possibly Sichi, devouring large amounts of her followers.

Getting to add a library and include a few more details about the backstory of the avian lands and why the memory eater is hiding in a graveyard was definitely satisfying too.

Very true, deities and powerful entities are impossible to balance out against the needs of the protagonists, especially if there's enough at stake, and the heroes have proven themselves reliably competent or uniquely capable of solving the plot. You did a fantastic job portraying Araya as someone who is simultaneously invested in the well-being of her followers, accepting of predators and detached enough to only be willing to offer indirect assistance, and these conflicting aspects feel very naturally contained within her personality. The line about how much of a nightmare her direct control of her Temple's affairs would have been rang genuine, for instance.

Araya's unwillingness to directly oppose The Tunneler may also have something to do with the relative power of the two gods, or to the dangers of such direct opposition, especially if they are not merely powerful magical people living outside reality most of the time, but more intrinsically connected to their elements, like personifications of the same.

I still don't feel like the role of carnivores is well enough justified in the game world for the Tunneler's plot to incite immediate rejection in herbivore peoples in particular, but consistently, quite a few factions have shown support for it, making the overall moral dynamics of the main quest all the more interesting for it. The finale of the game may call for such a justification to be voiced, and and I'm looking forward to seeing what you'll come with for that part, even if it won't come around anytime soon! Then again, a general affirmation of the right of every creature to exist may suffice for that purpose, even though it has already been brought up at different parts of the story that predators necessarily infringe of that right in others in order to survive.

BizzareBlue

Posted by BizzareBlue 3 years ago Report

Mmmmh, originally I was planning to have Araya and The Tunneler be pretty close in terms of power, but looking over it, I think it would be worth adding a few hints that The Tunneler is definitely the stronger, which does give Araya a fairly strong incentive to avoid getting too involved.

Yeah, so far, most of the herbivore objections to the plot have been less centered on “Predators have a right to exist” and more on “We don’t trust you to turn us back,” or “We don’t want anyone else making decisions for our tribe.” Actually, it’s really only Sichi and possibly Martin who make that argument.
