Not sure what this is? Here's a post explaining the series!: https://aryion.com/g4/view/712411
____________
Sorry for the extended wait on this one, I started having some wrist issues when it was 90% finished and couldn't come back to it for a bit ^^; . But this chapter's a big one! We finish up the fight with the mercenaries, focusing on Dessa's shield and trying to keep them blinded based on suggestions, and things get a little dicey for a while.

And speaking of dice, we had a pretty crazy sequence of events here! After June leveled the playing field with the smoke, both she and Dessa rolled crits(Dessa to grab us, June taking a pot shot in the direction of Kip's voice "off screen", which is where the arrow in her shoulder came from), nearly turning things around. But after messing up one dodge, Kip got pissed and rolled back to back 20s for dealing with Dessa at the end there. Kinda took the wind out of Adrea's sails on her clever move to use the orb instead of risking her staff, but still exciting!

Now, we've been instructed to have ourselves a meal. Should we do it? Any objections? Anything else you might want to bring up or try here?

On top of that, we've leveled up after this combat!
So, in addition to deciding what our next steps are, please also comment with how you think we should spend points for improvement:
- Choose one stat boost: +10 to health, stamina, or mana, or +2 to capacity
- Choose one attribute boost: +1 to Strength, Charisma, Perception, Dexterity, Resilience, or Intelligence
(There's nothing you need to do for that, but our Fire Magic Proficiency also improved after this fight! It was mostly all of the blinding that pushed us over the edge)

You can find Adrea’s character sheet here!: https://aryion.com/g4/view/712418

Remember, you can ask any questions about the world (that are relevant to the current chapter) if you think you want/need more information about something! I'll do a 'live' intelligence check before answering if it's something Adrea might know.

| CLOSED - There's either a more recent entry available to read or I've already outlined the next chapter! |

No objections. Kip's logic is sound so bon appétit.
As for leveling
Mana: since we tend to run low during a fight especially after a constant stream of fire.
Dexterity: resilience, strength, and dexterity all seem valuable as additional defense in different situations. Dex takes a close 1st here for me because it likely helps us avoid needing the other two attributes as often this of course comes at the cost of not having the point in one of the other two for when they are needed but that's probably fine at this level

This chapter was great! Real exciting, and things definitely got a bit dicey there. Felt like the most evenly matched fight Adrea's been in yet. Your descriptions of the pretty serious wounds everyone was taking really made it sound like a hard fought slug-fest.

I'm torn on how to proceed here. I feel like Adrea would be at least somewhat morally opposed to eating the now helpless mercenaries who haven't wronged us at all after they've surrendered, since we started the fight in the first place. But she's also smart enough to know there's no real viable alternative. Refusing to eat them would just serve to worsen our relationship with Kip (and by extension Sirna), and Kip would probably still kill them both since it's clearly important to her that word not get out about what just happened.

Probably with a little hesitation, I think Adrea should do as Kip says. Making sure to strip them and go through their belongings too. Hopefully we can find something of value, and a way to fix up our now damaged backpack. If we can't we might have to settle for taking Dessa's pack instead.

As far as levelling up, considering how fast we're burning through mana in anything other than a very quick fight, and that we've now improved in our fire magic so we're likely to be continuing to focus on it, I think we should get an extra +10 to mana. I'm also still in favor of further improving Adrea's intelligence, but I think a boost to perception or resilience could also make sense given how that fight went.

Now that our fire magic proficiency has been improved, we should also be on the lookout for opportunities to learn some tier two spells, though I doubt we'll have that chance for a while.

I suppose Adrea can take some solace in the fact that Dessa clearly would have done the same thing in a heartbeat if she were in our position.

As far as learning new spells, scrolls for low tier spells aren't that hard to come across and we could likely find some in most markets

We aren't exactly in a position to say no to eating the mercenaries, but how big is the dark elf capacity wise? I'm worried about us being at max capacity with her. Also, before we eat anyone, let's pick up our staff and backpack.

If we would be at max capacity after eating Dessa, I say we put +2 into Capacity. If not, then mana would be my choice.
Next, I'd say Charisma for our attribute boost. Could help us haggle prices and may even get us out of sticky situations

Dessa is only a couple inches taller than Adrea, she's fully confident she could fit her without pushing her limits. (Dessa would take up 11 capacity)

I would certainly eat the both of them, as they're too dangerous to let loose, and we're are pretty hungry. Once we ate the two, we're going to gather the herbs we need, get down the mountain, and inform Sirna about what we learned, before asking about who we inform about this, and how, given that it could be shadier than selling fairies.

As for the stat increases, I would take more mana(or stamina), and an increase in dexterity. I would also go and pick up our staff(after we eat the halfing of course)

Eat the elf, no hesitation. She would have done the same to us, and hesitating too much might look suspicious to Kip. Also, this is mercenary work, that’s just how it goes sometimes.

As for the level up, I agree with TrashMammal, +2 to capacity if Dessa would put us over, mana if it wouldn’t. No real strong opinions as far as the attribute goes, outside of NOT wanting it to be strength.

I think that if we judge that the elf would make us go over capacity, rather than boosting capacity, we should instead ask to eat the little one instead. That way, if Kip agrees to change, we can use our stat boost on boosting mana, instead of capacity.
Attribute boost, I think we boost perception.

Make sure we loot them for anything useful, and pick up our items as well.

Gosh, the hardest part about these is waiting for the next one. I really gotta work on not reading so fast.

No question about it, eat the elf! Adrea skipped breakfast after all. To start, Be sure to thank Kip for letting you have the bigger meal then take anything useful/dangerous from Dessa. Before Adrea starts, she should parrot back "Looks like this job comes with a meal after all." Maybe start feet first, I'd like to hear what Dessa has to say to that.

Side thought: Our plan of Miram outting Sirna to the mages' guild is now a ticking timebomb. Adrea should focus on making sure she finishes this job and gets back to town in a timely manner. Which leads me to...

A Question, Will lugging around Dessa encumber our progress signifigantly?

Now stats and attributes, Mana and Charisma, I have a feeling Adrea could benefit from it.

She'll definitely slow us down a bit in completing our task, but it's unlikely to delay things so much that we wouldn't get back until the next day

Also, I forgot to mention this in my first one, but sorry to hear about your wrist, Os! Is it better now, or not so much? If it’s not, hope it gets to feeling better for you soon. (P.S. sorry if that’s too off-topic)

Yeah it's doing better, thanks! I have a brace for it now

Alright, I realize this is kinda late, but here goes.

So... I don’t see why these two by necessity have to die, especially from Adrea’s perspective as a fellow adventurer just doing a job to get some cash. They cooperated after some less than gentle coaxing, and we started things anyway. More or less, they were just in the wrong place at the wrong time. I think these are all fair to point out to at least attempt to make Kip guilty or have second thoughts. I say Adrea should offer an alternative course of action and be firm and reasonable about it. Here’s an idea. Take Dessa and June back to town as prisoners while not revealing who we are or who we work for. From there, we can give them an offer that’s really too good to pass up: help us track down the in-between in Irbeck or be eaten instead. We could even potentially loot and sell a large portion of their gear and maybe some of Adrea’s stuff to get some cash to make letting the two live worth Kip and Sirna’s while. Plus, having the two with us would make it harder for the employer to track them down because of their unexpected location. I think essentially paying Sirna to receive free labor from Dessa and June on a job that could help keep her herb supply safe while she remains incognito would maintain her trust. It would show that we have concerns about her and her supply outside of this one job. Plus, it could even score Adrea some long-term companions because they’d probably at least be a little grateful for being saved instead of eaten. (I know this is a long shot, but I really liked my girl, Dessa. Figured I’d at least put this out there bc she’s worth it <3)

For stats, I’d say boost mana. It’s kinda useful for a caster.

For attributes, level charisma. Never hurts to be able to negotiate.

(Realized this was kinda long, sorry!)
