Not sure what this is? Here's a post explaining the series!: https://aryion.com/g4/view/712411
____________
There was a bit of a divide on how to handle Sirna's request, but ultimately I decided to go with those that wanted to turn her down until we could discuss with Miram, and Miram seems to support rejecting her work. I thought about stopping in the morning for us to decide what to do, but shopping has come up a few times in various comments so I decided to go right ahead with a trip to the market! We're basically picking up where we left off that first day we went to the mage guild, since at the time seeking out the hunters guild and potentially heading to the market were originally part of the plan for the day before getting sidetracked with Sirna.

You can see a list of things available at the market at the end of the chapter, what should we buy/sell? Any other input on what we should be doing?

You can find Adrea’s character sheet here!: https://aryion.com/g4/view/712418

Remember, you can ask any questions about the world (that are relevant to the current chapter) if you think you want/need more information about something! I'll do a 'live' intelligence check before answering if it's something Adrea might know.

| CLOSED - There's either a more recent entry available to read or I've already outlined the next chapter! |

Nice! Good to see Miriam has been busy and that she was in favour of our choice to turn down Sirna. I'm loving the dynamic we've got with our little buddy and I'm glad we ended up putting her first.

That comment Sirna made about getting back to Miriam "before she does anything rash" makes it pretty clear to me that she must have known about our arrangement with Miriam, which must mean she's very well connected and has eyes and ears at the Inn, as well as probably many other places around town. It just feels too pointed to be a coincidence. We should expect her to keep tabs on us and probably assume we're being listened to if we're in public (and maybe even when we aren't).

As far as shopping, I think we should definitely pick up the needle & thread so that we can patch up the damage to our robes & backpack, and a mana potion so that we always have at least one with as just in case we need it.

For spells, I really like the idea of picking up Enrage as a way to enable us to fight hand to hand in a pinch, since we should be trying to find a solution to enemies that we can't keep at a distance, and it's a fairly cheap spell. It might even be a good catalyst for Adrea starting practicing a little martial arts for use in such situations. Searing Wave also seems like it'd be very useful as a powerful targeted AOE, so we should grab that too. And finally Ice Wall seems like it'd be a great utility or defensive spell to have access to, especially if we end up getting into any fights in an urban or otherwise tight environment not out in the wilderness like all our fights have been so far. Honorable mention goes to Hoarfrost & Inner Furnace, since they both seem fun but would be negated by our focus on fire magic for damage, and our inability to reliably swallow enemies in combat respectively. We should also try to haggle down the prices a little bit, at least for these scrolls as combined they're pretty pricey.

I also think we should sell off everything listed. The sword, the arcane focus and the bottle. We shouldn't have need of any of it.

We'd definitely want to look into some sort of physical combat training if we're hoping to use Enrage on ourself! It would help a little bit in a pinch, but a small boost to melee damage isn't going to make a huge difference with only untrained fists and a big stick at our disposal. Though the strength boost aspect would certainly help with things like breaking away from enemies that have us grappled like Dessa did in the last fight, or if *we* wanted to try and grab someone to swallow for that matter.

VigorousJazzHands

In that case I'd say we should pursue that training. Would that be something we could pick up alongside Miriam at the Hunters guild?

OsmiumOrchid

Posted by OsmiumOrchid 2 years ago Report

It's possible! If they are willing to train Miram, there's not much reason Adrea couldn't partake as well

I say we def buy the needle & thread as our robes are pretty messed up, but are they a one time use item or no? I also wouldn’t mind if we bought enrage, but everything else that’s listed seems like a pass for me.

Also I’m okay with selling the arcane ball, but nothing else. The blade would be good to keep in case we run out of mana or get into a close combat encounter, and the glass bottle I have a plan for. Since we’re in town, I say we go to a tavern and get any kind of alcohol and fill the glass bottle with it, that way we have our own molotov!

Oh also! Let Miram do the haggling, she seemed confident in her ability before at the inn

OsmiumOrchid

Posted by OsmiumOrchid 2 years ago Report

We should be able to get multiple uses out of the needle and thread! We actually already have an extra spool of thread that we took off Veela way back when as well, so as long as we have the sewing needle we should be set for a while.

OsmiumOrchid

Oh and also remember that Adrea doesn't know how to use a sword at the moment! I mean obviously anyone can figure out "swing the pointy bit at the people you want to hurt" so its not like she physically can't use it, but since she has no proper training most opponents that would be engaging us in melee combat would probably easily evade/parry her attacks or even disarm her

So one thing that I'll definitely suggest is selling the glass orb, though for a much higher price. If a week magic focus(a thing that is clearly inferior to what we have) goes for 6 gold and 7 silver, then the basic should be worth twice as much(13 gold and 4 silver) at least. If so, I would raise the price to at least 1/4, cause I would want more money. But ideally(and highly unlikely) is getting 1/2 of it's actual value.

As for spells, I definitely want to buy at least one scroll of earth, fire, water, and storm, mainly to broaden our magical talent, mainly Minor heal, Gust, Mud Trap, and Spark. Minor heal would be good for taking care of injuries if we don't have any potions, and mud trap can trap foes if we need it. We can't overlook any spells And perhaps being a jack of all trades would improve our stance at the guild, though I doubt that harpy(the bitch at the front desk) would stop having a vine covered in thorns in her non-existent ass.

Also I'm down for buying the map of the area, and buying the needle and threads. We really need to start taking care of our clothes.

As for spells we're already proficent with, aka fire and ice; Enrage and Ice walls seems like good investment, mainly because they're more options that we can use to help us. I also consider looking into Immolation Burst as it can be used to push enemies who are too close to us, and we can definitely cast it without problem(fire proficieny level 2). Only problem is that it cost a bunch of gold.

Persona59523

Either way, I would like to do a training montage during our 'downtime' where we basically practice these spells, just to get the experience. I wanna our character to become the elemental master of all things.

OsmiumOrchid

Posted by OsmiumOrchid 2 years ago Report

The "Weak" magic focus actually isn't inferior, though I can see how the naming convention I chose could be confusing ^^; ! The basic ones we have(both our staff and the orb) don't do anything other than let us cast spells without a mana penalty, the "weak" one for sale is one step stronger and has an added beneficial effect on spells cast with it (It extends the duration of any spells with time limited effects, like Blind, Enrage, Ice Wall, etc.)

Also, remember that until we get enough experience with them to gain a proficiency level, spells that aren't Fire or Frost will cost double the usual mana, so it might not be wise to try and branch out to so many new elements all at once!

Persona59523

Posted by Persona59523 2 years ago Report

Wait, really? Weak isn't worst than basic? That strange. Then I'll retract my haggling statement, and will suggest either Minor Healing or Mud trap. We need more spells that aren't outright dps. We can't just cast fireball all the time

The needle seems necessary to fix our broken bag, we already have a spool of thread to use for with it too.
Selling: The Iron Broadsword and Arcane Glass Orb both were picked up for selling so let's get some extra spending money to make up for the spells we're going to buy. (Never sell a glass bottle, you could fit so many things in there, from potions, to fairies, to even a deku princess)
The Spells in order of perceived usefulness: Minor Healing, use case is pretty obvious as a way of healing after fights when we suspect we won't need the mana elsewhere. This one will pay for itself by needing to spend less on healing potions and bandages.
Mud Trap, can help maintain distance between us and our opponent while not blocking our line of sight like ice wall. Traps can be set beforehand to guard direct lines of approach to the fighting or cover an otherwise unwatched flanking position. Blind in combination with this can also be a crippling combo that keeps opponents stuck and vulnerable. Trapping opponents would also be extra useful if Miram does become an archer. Being able to protect our ally with the same trap setting that keeps us safe huge boon towards combat effectiveness.
Ice Wall, can do much the same, but blocks our own line of sight with the tradeoff that it doesn't require soft ground.
These three are a good start, there are others I see a good use-case for (namely gust and wall of fire), but we shouldn't overspend right now as we still don't have a steady income and the inn is a constant tax.
Oh, and we should probably let Miram do the haggling for us.

Any chance of getting a discount for bringing your own glass bottle when buying the mana potion? (just a thought)

I think we do sell the orb and sword for sure, which puts our total at 12 gold, 38 silver = 15 gold, 8 silver. Buy the mana potion (-8 silver)
{15 gold}

We should sell our staff for the carved staff (not exactly sure how much our own staff will sell for, but given the orb sells for 22 silver, I'm assuming it should sell for similar) (-4 gold, -5 silver)
{10 gold, 5 silver}

Some sort of area of effect spell would be a good idea - our options are Ring of Fire, Searing Wave, Immolation Burst, and Storm.
Ring of Fire is cheap, and lasts for a long time, so could function as zoning. Not sure how large of an area it affects, but it seems like a valid option.
Searing Wave is more expensive, but seems like a more powerful option.
Immolation Burst seems like a steep cost in both in gold and mana, and I feel like while it could potentially be a life saver in dire circumstances, most of the time, it won't be something we'll be getting much use of, especially as we want to be fighting at range.
Storm helps us branch out into a different school of magic, and chain damage is pretty cool.
I think I would choose Searing Wave or Ring of Fire. Giving the edge to Ring of Fire for the synergy with the new carved staff. (-1 gold)
{9 gold, 5 silver}

Definitely get Ice Wall, it gives us so much utility.
(-12 silver)
{8 gold, 3 silver}

Getting Gust would be good for keeping enemies at ideal ranges. (-9 silver)
{7 gold, 4 silver}

Hoarfrost seems like it would fill a similar role to Blind, so while it's cool, I think we pass on it.

Mud Trap would also be a good idea because it has synergy with Ice Wall (funnel them into the trap) and Gust (push them in), so I think we take that too (-11 silver)
{6 gold, 3 silver}

Enrage would be good if we had a warrior or similar ally, but at the moment we don't, I think we pass.

Inner Furnace doesn't seem like something we would absolutely 'need' in any situation.

Other spells, no real thoughts or ideas on them.

We should also pick up the spool and needle, and the map. And I guess the stamina potion as well. (-9 silver)

{5 gold, 4 silver}

On the bottle idea: Definitely not here since what we would be buying would be from a general merchant that just got their hands on some already bottled potions, but I suppose it's possible you might get a slight discount from a dedicated alchemist like Sirna that way? Might get a better offer for selling the bottle in that situation as well

ScarKnight

As far as spells go, Searing Wave seems like the best option as far as straight upgrading our arsenal goes, since we already have enough proficiency in fire magic to use it properly. Other than that, we also do probably want Minor Heal, it's outside of our specialty, but having some means of recovery could be a literal lifesaver.

Just to confirm, does the Carved Birch Staff make it so when we cast Blind it lasts longer? Because if it does, we do probably want that since it's kind of been our go to strategy.

As for selling, the glass orb and the sword are easy drops, but we might want to also sell off our current staff if we do want to buy the Carved Birch Staff.

VigorousJazzHands

Posted by VigorousJazzHands 2 years ago Report

I hadn't considered that the Carved Birch Staff might be useful for extending the duration of Blind. If that is the case, I'd also be in favour of getting it and selling our old staff.

OsmiumOrchid

Posted by OsmiumOrchid 2 years ago Report

Yes, the Birch Staff would make Blind last a little longer! It slightly extends the duration of anything with a lingering/ongoing effect like Blind, Enrage, Ice Wall, etc.

ScarKnight

Posted by ScarKnight 2 years ago Report

In that case, yeah. My suggestion is to sell the orb, sword, and our current staff, and buy Searing Wave, Minor Heal, Ice Wall, the needle and thread, and the Carved Birch Staff, coming out to a total cost of 12 gold, nine silver, and two copper; which we should be able to afford assuming sqrt's math is right.

If we want to stay out of a stomach, then we'll want Adrea to pick up some spells to keep foes at bay since she isn't so great in close quarters without someone running interference.

I'd say Searing Wave, and Ring of Fire are must haves for area control or repelling enemies charging Adrea. Ditch the sword and bottle. Get the needle and thread. Pick up the minor heal as well, it'll be a huge boon.

I think that is a net 5 GP, 8 Sp, 1 CP spent. If we have already paid ahead for a couple days at the in I would then grab the Staff as well.

Immolation Burst would be good as well but super spendy. We can come back for it after another job.
