Many centuries ago, lands were ruled by feudal lords, upon which the serfs lived.
Serfs would work the land and pay taxes to their lords. Serfs were almost always prey species, and were required to pay taxes to their predator lords in the form of production, treasure, and importantly, themselves. These serfs had few rights, and were legally tied to the lands they worked.
The lords, in exchange for these taxes, would provide land for the serfs to work, and importantly, protection from external dangers. Lords generally allowed limited levels of freedom to their serfs, as long as the serfs met their obligations and remained loyal. Lords often had their own overlords, to whom they'd need to pay tribute to maintain their rights.
Whilst some lords were more benevolent, or oppressive, they all understood that overly gluttonous predators would often see their realms collapse as their most precious resource, the serfs, dwindled.
In this particular village, the lord about to devour her meal. This farmer has had the misfortune of being selected as the lord's meal this time. Different realms have different methods of selecting the food for lords, but here a lottery system of all the fiefdom's adults takes place, where the "winner" has the honor of providing nutrition of their lord.
Statistically, most serfs will never find themselves devoured by their lords. But for a serf in these time's, it is not the worst way to go, and this mouseboy farmer about to experience the embrace of his lord. He anxiously awaits the inevitable.
