According to the American dub, cousins. Censors figured that change was enough to explain why they were so close...forgetting all the lesbian subtext throughout the rest of their appearances in the show. So now instead of just being lesbians, the dub made them *incestuous* lesbians.
The powers that be likely looked at the upcoming seasons of the show, figured that they couldn’t get away with doing the same thing to those plot points as well , and decided to pull the plug on dubbing any more episodes.
