it never looks like the girls are in pain in the game, in fact in many scenes they seem to just lose the will to resist.

True, it's just that being made to feel good while you're melting and dying seems humiliating. Imagine being happy that you're someone else's nutrition. Good lord, the exact opposite of a painful death but in a bad way. I pondered this a lot during my reformation stories.
