What he's begging for is a way out of his own feelings. The things that weigh on his conscience won't go away, and he has no clue how to handle them. Since this whole "empathy" thing is still a new concept to him.

Yeah, atonement is kind of a weird concept. There's a big difference between atonement and forgiveness. All person who has wronged someone can do to atone is be the best person they can be, and even then that doesn't entitle them to forgiveness. Forgiveness has to be freely given, and honestly they may never give it.
