It was the first day of fall in 1973, and World War III was about to begin.
Of course, nobody knew this at the time, with the possible exception of a few of the top brass with the Air Force. In fact, there was nothing strange about this day whatsoever, to anyone not secured in a military bunker. Children frolicked on the playgrounds, couples did their weekly shopping, and a retired nuclear physicist in sat in his armchair, re-reading his book of Kurt Vonnegut short stories.
Until the sirens blared.
