As the cruse continues - actually, we step back a few hours first and look at some of the other passengers and what they're up to.

Then, if that wasn't enough, it seems that the sea voyage is going to be more dangerous than everyone thought.

Was a fun chapter, although Tabitha would probably not agree... Victoria's smugness was entertaining - the way after eating her prey she nonchalantly resumed their conversation... Very slick. Her prey even tried to argue back, only to be countered, further driving in her defeat. I do enjoy preys arguing with their preds, whether it's futile or not.

I wasn't sure what "Saphira the Second" meant at first and why she'd be on shift but in the final segment I realized Victoria was looking at Brenda (who had a sapphire armour). Victoria did come off as a bit ominous and a schemer from the get go.

"Another tale she’d been told as a girl was that it was predators in high places who spread the lie that humanoids couldn’t be predators to protect their own power."

That's a pretty interesting idea. A fabricated "pred species vs non-pred species" divide to make "non-preds" fly under the radar.

Victoria isn't quite on as solid ground as she thinks, but she's been lucky so far.

Brenda got that nickname back in "The Call", and heard about Emerald's sudden "cancellation" at about the same time. Perhaps she should have been paying more attention, but there wasn't enough to really be suspicious of then.

Oh, that's true. Checking back, that conversation was already hinting at Emerald's fate but I didn't pick up on it.

Good, that's the level of foreshadowing I was aiming for.
