Doomed Spoink By foxyoreos -- Report

Card art at: https://aryion.com/g4/view/1049547

*sneaky fox voice*: I bet you thought I'd forgotten about Pokemon cards, didn't you? X3

Mostly I kind of did, but I've been meaning to release this one for a while now. I wanted to experiment with a simpler art style, since Pokemon cards often get drawn by a variety of artists and have a variety of styles. But at the time I tried to make it, the result just didn't feel right. Then I got into the finger-painting sketches and I realized that the art style I was starting to gravitate towards was exactly what I wanted for the card. So I made it on my phone, and then exported it into Krita for cleanup and to add some of the more subtle effects like gradients which aren't possible on my phone.

This is a pretty dark card even by the Pokevore standards, but in my defense, I didn't make Spoink! They made a Pokemon who has a heart attack if they're ever picked up. This is on them! X3

The Pokevore cards are pretty cruel though. It's not a very nice variant of the Pokemon universe to live in >w<

❤❤❤

To be clear, every version of the Pokemon World is actual hell to live in if the Pokedex Entries are true.

Lol, true X3

I almost treat the Pokedex entries like their own separate lore. I'm not sure how they would line up with worlds like Pokemon Mystery Dungeon.

Even in the main games, you almost have to treat them like separate, they just don't match the games tonally at all.

I think that's part of what makes Pokemon kind of fun as a setting to play with. The canon is already a mismatch of different incompatible ideas, and each story becomes just choosing which of those ideas you want to focus on X3

Ok this is really nicely done but i have to point out 1 thing. The only way for miracle to activate is if you knock your own pokemon out because at the start of your opponents turn it dies immediately so it is VERY doomed

Thanks! <3

Yep, it's a tricky one X3 There are a few ways you can get around it.

My understanding is that if a Pokemon is poisoned, they take damage during a checkup step between turns, which triggers before any other effects or abilities - so if a Swallow Pokemon was about to faint from poison and you attached this card, you could trigger the Miracle ability. Attacks and abilities that deal recoil damage would also work (although I haven't released any Swallow Pokemon yet that have any of those). You could attach an item to Spoink that reduces damage taken, since the card doesn't say that Spoink faints, just that it takes 50 damage. And I do have some Pokemon powers rolling around in my head that would situationally allow attaching a Swallow Pokemon during your opponents turn, although they're not fleshed out at all (and would still not really help you all that much since start of turn means both yours and your opponents).

So there are ways, but it's pretty difficult to trigger, which is why I ended up also giving the "take 1 prize" reward. And honestly it still might be under-powered, it's just so situational.

The better way to use this I would guess would be using Spoink as a placeholder to evolve, that can also be used for Pokemon like Stuffed Growlithe that want their Doomed Pokemon to faint - since the downside of evolving Stuffed Growlithe that way is that Doomed Pokemon take a while to faint, and Spoink doesn't have that pawblem. And then maybe in some narrow tech situations, you get to activate Miracle. I think the actual strength of Spoink might actually be that it faints in one turn, so you can use it to immediately activate a Swallow Pokemon's abilities.

Pokevore cards in general are very likely pretty under-powered because Doomed Pokemon fainting awards your opponent a prize card unless you attach an item to prevent it. So there's situational tech required right from the start to prevent your Doomed Pokemon from just feeding prizes to your opponent - in addition to the card costs.

I've tried to balance around that by making the Swallow Pokemon abilities better, and there are other cards I'm working on to help mitigate it, but ultimately I'm mostly just trying to make the cards fun X3

They're also all balanced around a 2019 power-level, so they're going to be tough to play in any modern deck anyway X3

Yeah thats very fair i forgot about the between turns phase. But i see what you mean about feeding your oponents prized. But what if you made the doomed pokemon into a suoertype like EX cards with a special rule about "if this card faints while attatched to a swallow Pokémon your oponent takes no prize

It's a good idea, but I think that would potentially make them overpowered. And there are some fun mechanics around the prize cards too that I like just as flavor - cards like Feeder Form. I think what I'll end up doing is just trying to add more synergies and abilities to mitigate that downside.

Feeder Form is pawbably a pretty bad card because needing to draw a specific two-card combo is really inconsistent. But I could imagine having some Pokemon powers to mitigate that effect, and there are also cards I'm working on that make it harder for Doomed Pokemon to die.

I like the flavor (pun intended X3) of Swallow-themed decks needing to play kind of fast and deliberate and to either win quickly or set up machines to draw specific cards or keep their Doomed pokemon alive as regular potions. Or using Doomed pokemon mostly to smooth out the early game and shift into a late-game strategy. In theory there are effects that can do that - evolving a Pokemon really early can be really good for tempo, especially if you don't have to draw the evolution. If you lose 1 or 2 prize cards but that puts you into a position where your opponent can't keep a Pokemon alive, that's likely a good trade? And in the early game when you're ramping up, a 1-card cost "heal 10hp every turn for the next 5 turns, and then evolve your Pokemon" might be worth a prize card. I'm not sure.

I've also thought about introducing some kind of Arena trainer card that would act like Auras in MTG, so I could imagine having an arena that gets rid of some of the negatives.

But I also haven't tested any of this, so it could be horribly unbalanced (and pawbably is X3)
