In the aftermath of Era 3, Gemkind saw many changes, transforming in ways previously thought impossible. First and foremost, the Gem Empire was dissolved and reforged into the Gem Republic. The Diamonds set aside their political power, casting off illusions of godhood. Gems were freed from the shackles of the Grand Order, allowing them to live however they saw fit, following their hearts and minds rather than their programming. Gem Nobles forfeited their titles and much of their land, and the Republic formally apologized for eons of imperialistic pursuits across the Milky and other galaxies. Rebuilding efforts began, and peace swept across the cosmos... or at least as peaceful as things could be.
However, not every Gem got the memo.
Meet Aquamarine Facet-7R9E Cut-5XY, better known as 'Gretyl.' Way back in Era 1, she was one of the elite enforcers of Blue Diamond's will, carrying out top-secret missions that required the utmost discretion. She served faithfully, never once flinching in her duty. Gretyl loved her Diamond with all her heart and soul, believing Blue was her only master, creator, and reason for living. For Gems back in this Era, this was a very popular notion.
However, Gretyl was not perfect. During a mission, she made a mistake, a fatal one that ended with a Shattered noble Emerald. Such failure was not acceptable, especially for an elite Gem. They stood as the pinnacle of Gemkind and failure on their part reflected as failure on their Diamond's part. If anything, such flaws were considered blasphemy. Gretyl was lucky not to be Shattered on the spot.
Instead, Gretyl was reassigned to BW-90X6, an autpost on the fringes of the Gem Empire's borders. She was tasked with the 'important' mission to report any intruders on the territory... deep within the vast emptiness of space. Floating on an asteroid. With only binoculars to spot invaders.
Needless to say, this was a meaningless effort and Gretyl knew it. Deep down, she knew she was abandoned by Blue Diamond, by everyone. But she is an Aquamarine, a faithful servant of her Diamond's will. Gretyl was nothing without her Diamond. So she followed her mission to the letter, protecting the outer reaches of the Empire from anyone and everything that dared approach.
... thousands of years of silence can drive anyone mad.
So imagine Gretyl's delight when some buffoon Quartz arrived on her doorstep one day, insisting the Gem Empire was over. That the Diamonds stepped down from their thrones and Gemkind was free. Such blasphemy could not be forgiven. This must be a trick, some grand conspiracy to topple the Diamonds' power! The Grand Order was in danger!
After turning the messenger into a snack and Assimilating the fool, Gretyl finally fulfilled her duty: she flew across the cosmos to warn the Diamonds about this imminent threat. Regrettably, her communication relay had grown so far out-of-date and dusty from disuse that it no longer worked, so a face-to-face message was the only solution. And really, it was the perfect excuse to see her glorious master once more! Talk about lucky! With glee in her heart and laughter (perhaps tinged with madness) on her tongue, Gretyl vanished into the inky gloom of eternity, flying towards Homeworld...
... Interstellar space is a long, long way to fly. Gretyl has already been flying for a decade, and during that time, she's bumped into many more conspirators talking about 'Era 3,' claiming the demise of Pink Diamond, the gospel of love and peace from Steven Universe, and other such nonsense. She's devoured each and every single one. Nothing will stop Gretyl from snuffing out such traitors. Her appetite is truly bottomless.
Just pray she doesn't fly by you.
