I have only one question... what were these 2 black hideaways doing in Germany in 1938? Were they African American or African, French-African, etc? I know the character could not have known who they were but I was just wondering.

I just noticed that my previous comment made no sense whatsoever. But to answer your question, I am not sure, they're just blacks -- rather American, French, or African is solely up to the reader.
