So, here it is. The final, official reason why the characters can be eaten and then come back without a problem:

Well, they're just actors.

And, naturally, the studio has a plentiful supply of laxatives, as well as any number of jumbo sized bathtubs and jacuzzis for people to use when they need to evacuate any occupants.

You'd think the actor turnover rate would be fairly high, but the studios know how to deal with that kind of thing. All actors have a clause in their contract stating that they will not digest any of their fellow co-actors. Doing so invites some extremely harsh punishments. Let's just say there is a market for videos where someone gets eaten and actually digested, and leave it at that.

On a slightly more serious note, I like this both as an explanation and a sort of follow up to the comics. I definitely want to do more. The way to tell them apart, I think, will be the backgrounds: muted color for comics, white with gray shadows for behind the scenes stuff.
