It's a fish-eating dragon whose best friend is named after a fish (Hiccup Haddock). XD It wasn't a difficult conclusion to make and overmilk, I guess. XD

Just don't expect all the awesome flying dragon fights and stuff. Those don't happen until like, book 5
Toothless is tiny, irritable, and can talk. And he does. A lot. In third person. XD The Terrible Terror from the movie was actually originally designed to play him.

It's really hard to say-- I think I like the books better just because they're both thematically deeper and rely on less theatrical cliches. Plus, at least right now, there's far more material in them than in the film-o-verse.
I really do adore both hardcore, though. :)

really i woud never have guessed! cool im def gonna read the books now.. yeah the movie was a lil cliche but forgivably so cause hiccup and toothless were awesome

They ARE children's books, so if you don't like kidsy stuff to some degree, you may not like them. I think they're very deep stories, just told in a light, goofy format, but I've noticed not everyone sees them that way. So you've been warned. XD
And yes, I can definitely forgive the movie's cliches, due to the resulting awesome. They certainly did a great job cliches and all.

oh lol that's fine i love a lot of kids stuff like my fave book is still coraline and I first read it when I was 10 so there you go. sometimes deep stories can be told better with simplicity they're less pretentious that way...
