Lately I've been turning over ideas for an insect society in which I can write and RP. Just to get the creative juices flowing, I figured I'd draw up a few samples and see what came of them.

Some basic concepts of the society:

* High birth rate, high mortality rate
* Insects are not to scale with each other, but are bigger and smaller than each other based on their source insect.
* The world is one of plenty - herbivorous insects rarely go hungry.
* Insects do eat each other alive.
* Insects don't feel pain, just surprise and disappointment
* Though there is some gender disparity here, most insects wouldn't consider living a long life a compelling goal. Their motto: dm;hs.
* They have a quasi-Victorian fashion sensibility , but pre-industrial technology. Clothing is not an industry, it's THE industry.
* Society is generally anarchic, though individual sub-societies (like an ant sorority) may have laws of their own.
* A beetle private detective has a pretty easy job. All of his cases end with "Ma'am, your husband isn't missing - he was eaten." "Oh. Deadbeat," is the most common response.
* Praying mantises dress like nuns and belong to the order of the Lady of the Merciless Death.

Any species I should draw for reals (instead of just this scrappy sketch)?

Anything I should think about implementing in the society?

Should I just give up on pushing this insect idea on people?

I'm a fan of bug and insects. I don't know too much about your work to really say much, but I'll say how I see things if it helps. I really like all the characters here, generic or not, and can really see them having a place in a story from how they are drawn. The moth looks like he'd be the obvious bad guy.The ladybug would be the innocent, and the worker ant the everyday Joe. The spider could be either the beetle's assistant or the henchman of the moth. I'm not sure where the mantis's place would be, but I do love mantis preds. There's a lot of different insects, and bugs out there which are all capable of doing something unique. I know it's obvious, but having the society have it's "underground" society like oh so many do could be nice. It would probably be filled with the "darker" insects of the more dangerous variant.Or opposite being a haven for the more innocent ones. Just my thoughts.

Thanks - I appreciate the comment. I hadn't even thought of the moth as a bad guy - more like a Dapper Dan - but I like it! I like the idea of ladybugs being all innocent, too, especially as they're innocently munching on aphids during tea.

I was thinking of looking up the common bugs in my neck of the woods, and building a kind of population (sort of like the random population builders for fantasy towns) and just seeing what kinds of dynamics that would produce. :)

Thanks! I think the beetle makes a good basic character - not too much of a pushover, not too carnivorous.

I've been interested in this insect idea for a while... and these sketches just make me love it all the more.

I'd especially like to see a more detailed spider character... love spiders.
