Actually if you did find loot that was obviously magical, enchanted, or cursed. You would either need a wizard or wise man to identify it and what its capable of. The same goes for potions as well.

Well, in the Zelda games, if you find an object you just hold it up into the air and it spells out quite loud and clear what it is used for.

I remember a game where you can upgrade your sword by sacrificing your hit points to a dark god. Those hit points cannot be regenerated back of course.

so yeah, kick-ass sword ++++ a whole lot of points and thunder and lightning and what not special effects.
