Strega's seemingly happy-go-lucky (if predatory) demeanor masks some horrific events in her past. Namely: The Great War, also known as the Ylesh War. This story focuses on one small battle as well as some background info on the conflict. Note: Strega herself does not appear in this story.

Note: I don't know what it is with the story upload system here at Eka's. Sometimes (like this time) the word wrap doesn't work and I have to put carriage returns at the end of each line, then it centers everything instead of right justifying.

> that was, after all, why they were forcibly Uplifted

I see someone is a David Brin fan :)

I've not read them, but I had heard the term Uplift many years ago and it was appropriate. Falan are poor tool users and were quite primitive when last we saw them so them being part of Commonwealth begged two questions: how they got in (Uplift) and WHY they were uplifted (they are resistant to soulsuck and they were FORCIBLY uplifted for just this reason.) It was one of many things the Commonwealth did to survive during the war that would never have been seriously contemplated in a less desperate situation.

So, about 15 years ago, I decided to try and read all of the Hugo Award winning novels. There's about 60 of them, so it's a big challenge - especially since many of the winners are part of a series, and often not the first. I'm about half-way done.

My favorite of all of them is David Brin's Startide Rising. The book centers on a starship crewed by uplifted Dolphins. It's great science fiction, and I think furries in particular can appreciate the intelligent animal aspect.

If you haven't read it, I cannot recommend it enough. (FYI, Startide Rising is the second novel in a series of 6)

For many years I've mostly read during traveling since computer games and the Internet give me all the reading I can handle, but at the moment I'm reading a fun and somewhat pulpy science fantasy series (Destroyermen). When I finish that maybe I will look up Brin's stuff.

If you want, I can provide ebooks for the entire series.

I picked up all but the latest for about 4 bucks a pop including shipping. Internet used book stores are great.

Nice. Any more to this? Ends kind of abruptly.

The trick is to write this vignettes without ending up with an actual book. This one is something of a prequel to a much later (chronologically) story I wrote back in 1998. That one needs major work before I could post it but at least it's better than a Star Trek crossover I did around the same time. I read that the other day and Hsaa was almost literally a Mary Sue in it.

Hsaa appears in a lot of these old stories and this one helps explain why he still has nightmares many years later.

We only saw a little of this battle and bad as things were for him it got worse shortly after the seemingly good ending.

awesome sotry where did you get the idea for this

The war dates back to the 80s when I ran a high-tech campaign as part of my D&D universe. Though it was abandoned the idea remained and over the years I have gradually developed it into a fairly complete history. The ship combat system is mostly from an old game called Starfire and other parts of it are from a bunch of other science fiction books, save for the races which as all my own creations.
