Mary Joe Phemus, at first glance, seems like an example of the ever infamous "two heads who hate each other" problem, with Joe being loud, bombastic and aggressive, while Mary is shy, reserved and gentle.

In actuality, Joe is, on her own, a very upbeat, friendly lady with a lot of affection for living things, and a zest for life, while Mary cradles enough bloodlust to satiate a thousand orcs.

It's just that Mary's crippling sociophobia prevents her from acting upon this constant, borderline sexual desire for violence, forcing Joe to pick up her slack and pick fights, in the hopes of providing her other half with some semblance of stimulation in their shared life.
