Another pre-Sunday post, depending on how I feel... I might try to post two pages next week in order to speed the encounter along.
This is kind of an introduction to both combat, and forced encounters. A tutoriwoof if you would. Essentially, there will be points where you can't talk your way out of an encounter... otherwise Charisma would be the ultimate be-all-end-all stat. The wolf isn't very strong, let alone durable, and it's about as fast as Lyra with it's big belly. I will say that it is still possible to "lose" despite how simple the encounter is, but since there's currently no way of reforming the only way for Lyra to gurgle here is to give up completely.
In terms of fighting, at least without skills or magic (or a shield), decide on how you want to act and preferably be descriptive on the action. Lyra specifically will play out the actions to the best of her ability as the page goes on, usually split between acting and reacting. What's more is that an attack that seems more harmful will deal more damage, so inventive, skilled or potentially risky attacks will be more rewarded than say "Swing Sword, deal 4-6 damage".
That's enough tutorial for now, I will say the option of dropping the sword and just letting the wolf eat Lyra so she can escape afterwards is there, for anyone who wants to avoid combat. But I will state that Lyra will not gain EXP for escaping it's gut.

So I say. Lets get that wolf weakened and step forward with an advancing thrust!
Posted by AwokenedWispKP 6 years ago Report
The opponent is surely wide enough for it.
Posted by AwokenedWispKP 6 years ago Report
Only if you want to be.
Posted by Kartomic 6 years ago Report
Our first foe (and potential snack) is a wolf? Nice.
Go on the defensive, wait for an opportunity to strike, and try to do so in a way that knocks the wolf unconscious: hitting it on the head with the pommel of our sword should do the trick. Afterwards, lets try and see what's in its gut; if its another person, lets try and get the wolf to hork them up, and if not... well, more food for us!

Probably the easiest action to understand I've seen outside of "thrust with sword".
As a reward, I'll say that the wolf can be knocked out/weakened just by lowering its HP since it won't flee. You could treat it as though it has a trait where instead of running away when things get dicey, it'll fight until it's unable to.

I agree with Karotmic's plan here and with the wolf having some sort of tag in its ear might belong to someone so it might be prudent not to kill it. And if it doesn't belong to anyone, we could try taming it.
Posted by Kartomic 6 years ago Report
Oh dang, I didn't notice the ear tag! Hmm, I have no idea what it could mean. If it was someone's pet, it'd make more sense for the wolf to have a collar, right? Between the tag and the full, squirming stomach, there's definitely something off about this wolf.
Posted by AwokenedWispKP 6 years ago Report
Yes, a pet would have a collar.
Posted by Eboros 6 years ago Report
it might be cool to have a pet wolf, but firstly, knock the wolf out !
Posted by Razgriz 6 years ago Report
Fight! Perhaps you can free whatever is still alive in the wolf. Then foodtime!
Posted by AwokenedWispKP 6 years ago Report
Kinda surprised at how many people wanna free whatever is in its belly.
Posted by Razgriz 6 years ago Report
Could be someone edible! :D
Posted by Kartomic 6 years ago Report
Or a friend! A delicious friend!

this wolf seems to be sure of him. so let's take a defensive stance to force him to attack us. and when he attacks us, move to the side to dodge the blow and destabilize it. then, take advantage of this opportunity to attack while he is destabilized. (=>Swing Sword, deal 4-6 damage + bonus destabilized !)
if this attack is not enough, Lyra must move back and return to the defensive position. if the wolf stupidly re-attacks her as before, then she does the same thing again.
but if he hesitates to attack, then it can be provoked by throwing the dagger to him to force him to do the same thing as before. (It does not matter if the dagger does damage or not, the goal is mainly to annoy him!)
I would add that, given the current state of Lyra, it would not be good for her to attack first: she has too much chance to be countered (yes, even by a wolf!), or to make a mistake and leave a big opening for his opponent.
Posted by AwokenedWispKP 6 years ago Report
Yeah, Lyra personally is afraid since this is her first time meeting something hostile... let alone intending to eat her.
Much like a Budding predator, a character with no combat experience won't have much confidence in a fight. By the same note; that kinda applies to most things.
Posted by Lerkur 6 years ago Report
If it's a threat to the environment, then just knocking it out will not only continue to clean out this forest of food, but also potentially lead to it going out to raid other areas like a locust.
On the other hand, it does look like it has an earring or tag on one of its ears, so maybe it's someone's pet. If so, killing it may get on someone's bad side. It may also not be the cause of the forest being picked clean if someone's already taking care of it.
So, I think Lyra should swing with the flat of the blade to try and knock it out, then set about freeing whoever or whatever is inside the wolf's stomach.
Posted by AwokenedWispKP 6 years ago Report
Oh wow, congrats on understanding just how bad of a threat this single wolf is~ Yes, if it survives it's encounter with Lyra it will simply move elsewhere and become an even bigger problem... and if left alone for too long it might even get bigger and no longer have the stats of a "wolf".
It's also the first encounter ever, so I wouldn't put something that would get you in trouble for killing it... especially since there was a chance that Lyra wouldn't have ended up as a predator from the get go and would've had to physically slay the wolf to actually stop it from being a problem as she wouldn't have the means of containing it after knocking it out.

*Gasp!* Our first opponent AND our first chance for heroics?! Fight! Win! Rescue! Make friends! Then possibly eat said friend if s/he is and asshole! :D
If we do win the fight, I suggest pushing/squeezing the person(??) up instead of cutting the wolf open. :3
Posted by AwokenedWispKP 6 years ago Report
I should probably point out that the woof's belly is significantly smaller than Lyra is, and Lyra is classed as being "short".
Although I honestly didn't come up with anything for what's in the woofs belly at this point since I didn't really want to do something that might not have been explored.
Posted by Kartomic 6 years ago Report
Perhaps there's a smaller animal in the wolf's stomach? That, or a short race like a goblin or a kobold.
If possible, it's worth seeing who or what's inside that wolf, at least.
Posted by Jamesbrid 6 years ago Report
the wolf has an earing is that a sign of a pet or some cursed magic item. (Earing of unending hunger or turn wearer into ravonous wlof?) keep distance and work out what this wolf can do, it clealy beat someone either its master or a stranger. throw dagger but be careful not to lose it.
Posted by Jamesbrid 6 years ago Report
we could use the environment and make it comically headbutt a tree but I don't think we have the agility or speed for that. cut a tree branch to fall on it.
Posted by AwokenedWispKP 6 years ago Report
With the woof's belly as full as it is, it moves around rather clumsily and doesn't have its normal agility. So while Lyra can't outrun it, she definitely can dodge out of the way if she's careful.
Also, it's kind of nice to see people picking up on the tiny details and trying to come up with ideas behind it. Refreshing even. x3

>Flirt with woof and give it pats.
I'm sure it's a good boy and just needs some pats. Maybe a belly rub. :V
Posted by Eboros 6 years ago Report
why not, but with a 3 in charisma, a wolf who wants to eat Lyra, and a Lyra not very reassured, this movement is likely to be very risky !
But, like the MJ said, "... potentially risky attacks will be more rewarded..." ... if we can consider that like an attack !!!!!
otherwise, Lyra may give him a belly rub, but from inside !!!
Posted by Kartomic 6 years ago Report
Is flirting with the wolf koscher?
Posted by Kartomic 6 years ago Report
Idea! If there's someone inside that wolf instead of a something, then we might be able to get them to help us.
Call out to whatever's inside the wolf, tell them you want to help, and ask if they can struggle or otherwise hamper the movement of the wolf so you can do so!

If the double update defeats the wolf, bind it in vines squeezing out its meal a possible ally. then either carry the wolf around with help from the new ally (By self if ally disagrees) or eat it.
If you carry it around it’s a good idea to upgrade the bindings so it doesn’t escape and try to eat you, try and tame the wolf for 2 weeks (In game) (Possible second ally) if its not tame or slightly controllable eat it.
Unfortunately this idea is risky and we don’t get a meal the choice here is try and get 2 allies in 1 encounter and lose a meal or just eat the wolf if possible your ally would probably suggest this.
Ally 1 (companion) species ??? class ??? gender ??? equipment probably none due to being eaten give them your dagger (Wait I don’t see a class thingy)
Ally 2 (Animal companion/pet)
If only 1 allowed let the wolf digest the person as you give them belly rubs and show who’s the boss.
Another thing is eat the wolf rear first you jaws will push its meal out and save the victum. (Not doing this I want the wolf)
Some battle moves I thought would be cool but not worth trying.
Climb tree and drop a beehive from it. This could backfire because you could get stung, also you could slip and fall into the wolfs open maw.
Also the picture doesn’t show a beehive the wolf probably misbeehaved and ate it somehow.
Run at tree, jump at it then kick off the tree to flip over wolf and while doing that slash it with your sword. This could backfire by jumping straight into the wolfs mouth.
Dual wield sword and dagger. Not sure how well this will go seems it looks like a 2 handed sword also the issue of balancing after swinging a heavy sword and light dagger.
Shove sword into tree and use it as a platform. Losing a weapon to a tree not the best idea also you’ll be to slow to use it.
Jaw stab, let it pin you but have a free arm to shove dagger in its mouth. Probably has a jaw made of something strong this is a vore story.
This comment is the indecisive mind ... I hope I got all that out. Also it might be a mind to far ahead: -_-
Hopefully we don’t get Wolfed down.
Posted by AwokenedWispKP 6 years ago Report
Erm... long and confusing comment. Slightly understanding how some DnD GMs feel with so many people wanting to make this woof into an ally.
But um, as for the old one's sword, it's classified as a shortsword.
Posted by JScofi 6 years ago Report
The enemy is much shorter than us, and will probably attack with a bite. So we should squat down, and hold the sword level towards the wolf, keeping it trained on it. If it lunges towards us, thrust forward, aiming for the head, and hopefully an open maw, to stab it in the throat.
For a second attack, try and cut the ear with the tag/ring on it. if it is enchanted somehow, that should disrupt anything its doing.

people seem to misunderstand what posting two updates mean. They're also way over analysing this. xwx
Normally I start working on it on Friday and post it anywhere between that point and Sunday every week. A second update would likely be started around Monday or Tuesday and posted hopefully on either Wednesday or Thursday.
Posted by JScofi 6 years ago Report
then go with the crouching readied strike for when it lunges at us.
Posted by Jogoon 6 years ago Report
I was actually going to suggest a similar course of action as your first attack, though my initial comment I had typed up probably went into far to much detail. Though I would not advise stabbing into its open maw as that is a good way to feed ourself to it.

Weaken it
Posted by jjlava 6 years ago Report
We are afraid and have pretty much no confidence with absolutely no combat experience.
Slide our right foot forwards a few inches followed by our left foot doing the same to get us in range, raise our hands upwards to chest height then swing downwards at the wolf as hard as we can tilting our whole body forwards until we're pretty much leaning over. Clentch our eyes shut as we swing.
Alternatively if the wolf attack us before or after we swing.
Jump backwards yelping in fear and turn our sword sideways in an attempt to block its attack even swinging it back and forth repeatedly like a bat as we continue to retreat backwards and make the creature back off. If the wolf leaps for our face tilt our head back suddenly whilst turning it away in a desperate attempt to keep the wolfs teeth away from our face.
(I'll be honest there are better actions to take then what I'm suggesting but I think this is how the character would act in this given situation.)
Posted by AwokenedWispKP 6 years ago Report
Kinda close actually. I finished my Com for new years so I've already written up the next page, it just lacks a picture, which is why I haven't posted it yet.
Posted by jjlava 6 years ago Report
Ah, if I'm understanding this right then I'll have to comment faster then. But luckily for me that what I suggested is close to what's happening? I'm not going to presume anything, thank you for replying even if I might have been too late.
Posted by AwokenedWispKP 6 years ago Report
Eh, usually I post every Sunday. But I'm trying to speed things up to get through the encounter faster.
Tbh, until Allies and Magic becomes a thing, I'm essentially going to have to throw various animals at people so that fights don't end up lasting 10 pages of wittling HP down or attempting to render the other unable to fight.
