This is the first half of the chapter I originally planned to release today. It got so long I decided to split it in two. Other half is almost completely done, just need to refine a few paragraphs

U.N.F.O.R.T.U.N.A.T.E.L.Y, I have bad news

You may have noticed in previous chapters that I have repeatedly insisted I am not keeping a regular release schedule, despite consistently dropping a new chapter every Friday.

This is partly a matter of blatant superstition: Every time in the past I said I’m going to regularly post or update something, it fell through in less than a week. Therefore, sayeth my brain, by actively not sticking to a schedule, I’ll be able to keep up the regular posts.

The other reason is more rational: I have had an exceptionally large amount of time that I could use for writing. The lab I work at is new, and for the last month there’s been a lot of sitting around waiting for supplies to arrive and forms to be approved. From the beginning of this endeavor, I knew this would not last. We are finally starting to come online; experiments will probably start up next week. While I will still have opportunities to write, the days of spending 6+ hours in a row typing are over. Please adjust your expectations for new releases accordingly.
