After posting the original Toon Style Test here and a couple of other places, I got some feedback from several people suggesting that with the addition of some three-point lighting it would be much better. So, after reading a couple of tutorials and getting a bit of help from one of the people who provided the original critique, I've come up with a new, much-improved version. Nothing in the scene has been changed other than the addition of some lighting, but it made a big difference.

Oh, that is a *lot* better! This lighting works great for a toony style, I think. Makes the colors pop.

I also think I can see her face well enough now that, as far as the model goes, it might still be a bit too textured on the part under the nose/where the laugh lines separate that and the cheeks--at least compared to how much her big ol' eyes deviate from the human norm.

Of course, that part might actually be fine and it might be something else tripping me up. Something about the fact that one of her eyes is forced to look through what reads as a solid mass of hair (as opposed to a veil of strands) might be sending confused signals to my brain.

Thanks! I'm not sure if I'd want to change the combination of morphs making up her face, but level of detail in that area is something I'll try to keep in mind for future toon characters. Also, now that you mention it, I totally get what you mean about the eye position relative to the "solid" mass of hair. I doubt I'll do another update of this particular image, but I'll definitely be more careful about eye positioning in toon scenes from now on.
