Whenever you see piles of treasure that have no logical reason to be there, Fireball everything. Strangely abandoned piles of stuff are only one step below surprisingly life-like statues on the dungeon trouble-o-meter.

I bet it was some greedy goblins running the trading store, selling "special" gear to wealthy but not very clever looking adventurers... let the mimics feast, capture them again while sleeping off a big meal and collect the loot left behind.

Never trust goblins...
